I put a password on my kindle fire so no one, like the kids, could go on the internet. God help me I forgot the password. Is there a way to retrieve it without having to delete everything on the kindle and starting over?

Nope. Have to reset to factory defaults. (Of course you can just redownload everything from Amazon.com/myk pretty easily)

try "password."

After you have either remembered the password or reset to factory defaults ... Go to the 'apps for android' section of Amazon's website and search for 'parental controls'. There are several freebie apps that let you control webbrowzing and/or purchasing.

Btw, in this era of smart phones for toddlers and universal connectivity, with everyone's friends having mobile devices, there really isn't any way to prevent your kids from accessing the web at will.

Yes, I just did it today. Go on amazon.com under "manage your kindle and deregister your kindle. Then from your kindle fire go to my account and register your kindle using the email and password that it was under when it was locked. It worked for us!! My daughter had music on here that is no longer on the internet. If I would have had to reset to factory settings, she would have lost all that. Does anyone else think it is stupid that they cannot just email your password to you? We honestly do not remember setting up a password, and we know neither one of us set parental controls to on. Anyway, give it a try. Will save the headache of reloading everything and losing that that you cannot reload.

When you de-register on amazon, it lets you get acces to the kindle fire so you can go to "my account". I don't understand what you mean by using the "email and password that it was under when it was locked". I'm pretty sure I am entering the right password, and it isn't accepting it. JB

" Does anyone else think it is stupid that they cannot just email your password to you?"

Amazon does not have your passwords, other than the one you use to access your account. They are stored on the device. There is no reason Amazon should be expected to keep track of them.

@carrie: All your books and apps from Amazon will be available for download again from the cloud when you re-register it to the same account as before.

I wasn't sure where else to ask this but its about a "lost password":
I was looking at buying a kindle fire hd 8.9 16gb from someone at my school. They say: "Item was purchased on CL, and couldn't register it as per Amazon. You can browse Internet with wifi, but can't REGISTER" Further it was described as not having the password for the kindle which is why it won't work.
Does this mean I can just reset the password if I purchase it and reset it, or is there something wrong with the kindle?

Bridget Ruth says:
Does anyone else think it's stupid that you can't remember a simple password? It doesn't even have to be a complicated password like the ones websites require.

Amazon doesn't know what the password you set on your device is. They can't just send it to you. Apple doesn't do that either if you forget your passcode on one of their devices. You get 3 tries, and then you're locked out for a few hours. My Android phone is encrypted. I screw up that passcode enough times and it can potentially wipe my device (security settings required by my work email). So I set is as a simple sequence of numbers that is easy to remember.

 Ann says:
@Lauren - If it was purchased on Craigslist and couldn't be registered, it was probably reported lost or stolen and has been blacklisted by Amazon. If that's the case, you won't be able to register and use it.

LadyH95 says:
@Lauren - I would be concerned that the device had been reported stolen and blocked from registering by Amazon. You should ask for the serial number and contact Amazon to see if the device had been reported stolen before you purchase it.

Do you lose your pictures?? I have a kindle fire hd.. Im so lost. I have a lot of pictures

A. Dietz says:
If you stored your pictures in your cloud storage, you can download them again. If you just transferred them from a PC or Mac, they were not backed up and you'll have to get them from the original source again.

Lost the password and email to my kindle fire and it has a gift card on the account that still has a balance will I lose the balance if deregister the device ?

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 11, 2013 6:38:09 PM PDT
No, the gift card is associated with the account, not the device.
