I have a Kindle that's stopped working. Are there any suggestions on disposing of it in an environmentally safe way?

Contact a local vocational school it maybe some fodder for the electronics or tech class. Deregister it first.

Bufo Calvin says:
Just to add a bit more information, Folina's link will take you to Amazon's own Kindle recycling program (which is actually done by Re-Tek in the USA...they have a European program as well). Re-Tek says:

"The unit will undergo Secure Data Destruction

The battery will be removed from the unit for proper recycling.

The remainder of the unit will be shredded and processed for commodities material recoveries."

Hi Delores,

Are you absolutely sure your Kindle is dead? You can try rebooting it, if you haven't already. And if it really is dead, no harm done. You can just follow the above suggestions to dispose of it properly.

- Fully charge your Kindle, then unplug it from the power source.
- Press and hold the power button for thirty seconds, and ignore anything that might come up on the screen. (Be sure to hold the button for the full thirty seconds. It is the difference between restarting versus rebooting.)
- Release the power button and leave it alone to come alive again. (You may have to briefly press the power button one more time.)

Yes, thanks Arual, I have done all that you suggest and it is absolutely dead. I bought another one to replace it.

Thanks for the info. It's good to know about this recycling program.

Um, never thought about selling it on eBay. Thanks for the idea.

Thanks LJA, what a great idea. This sounds like the perfect solution. Donating to help a student feels right.
