Actually, that's not true. You can certainly text with a tablet over wi fi without the need for a smartphone. Here are some apps that are compatible with the Kindle Fire. I have not used any myself, so read the reviews and judge for yourself.

textPlus Free Text + Calls for Android Phones, Tablets + Kindle Fire + Fire Phone

Textfree

TextNow

Bufo Calvin says:
Patsy, I've texted from my Fire using TextPlus, which Laura cites above. It works fine for that, but the only real problem I have is that I haven't gotten the notification sounds to work. In other words, I can text out (and to a group of people, which is nice), but unless I'm watching, I don't know if I've gotten a response.

Old Rocker, just to point it out, I've also made phone calls on my Fire using the Magic Jack app...works okay.

Thank you everyone. I have that Text+ on mine but don't like how it works, as you said Bufo Calvin - no notifications. I tested it on my husband and he said it came thru but with an odd "phone" number. When I looked into it, it had indeed assigned me a "phone" number. I don't know, it wasn't all that wonderful and didn't feel good so I thought maybe there was a better one people were using. I will just give it time because I can see that anything is possible in technology today. :)
God bless you all - Patsy

I agree, at first text plus worked then it stopped, had to switch to text now, no notifications though, but does anyone have any suggestions for me, I have a kindle fire HD.

J. Allen says:
Try MightyText. The application does not yet exist for the Kindles, but you can use it from the web browser.

My textnow crashed and I can't get it back. I'm going back to my simple Virgin mobile cell.

I put textnow on my daughters Kindle fire. I just deleted it because she received spam from a REALLY nasty adult site. WOULD NOT recommend this app.

I can't believe there isn't a texting app that's simple to get and use on kindle fire like an IPad or iPhone!

PS56k says:
Any texting is via cellular packets using the SMS or MMS internal protocols
to deliver the text from an originating phone number to a destination phone number.

Therefore, I would guess that any/all of the Apps would have to accept the text,
and then send it out via some pool of the App's assigned phone numbers.

So, you might not see the same phone number ID every time,
or even might be the same phone number used for all of the App users !
And of course - how to get revenue for using the App and sending the SMS text messages -
ads, spam, junk sent to destination ?

I have been using textfree for a couple of years, and it works great. I can also "call" using it, and that works perfectly well, too. It is also nice to call the number if I can't remember where I set down my Kindle fire - it rings, so I can locate it, lol.

I wonder if some one can help me out..I bought my Mom a Fire HD 10 and she wants to be able to text using it but does not have cellular service, just WIFI. Is there an app she can get that will achieve this? does it matter if the phones she is texting to are iOS or Android?
