I bought a used kindle and certain apps that I assume are preinstalled come up with the message "unfortunetly _____ has stopped" The seller says supposively it does work with the OS. I did notice the kindles screen looks different than what is described on the manual. For example, the lock screen shows a lock with a circle around it and the the manual always talks about a "quick settings" button which there is none. I installed the kindle app and again that looks nothing like I've been seeing. Another thing is the kindle is supposed to show your name on the top left corner which this one does not. Can someone help me out I don't know anything about kindles.

With the number and scope of your questions, you would do well to have a chat with Customer Service. At the top of this screen you'll find a blue Help link. Click on that and follow the directions.
Many of us who use this method of requesting assistance prefer the Call Me option, wherein you input your telephone number, and Amazon calls you very quickly. In many instances, within minutes.

Hi, I have a kindle fire first generation and it does not show my name on the top left corner (or anywhere else on the screen) - thank goodness, as I wouldn't like it if it did.

It would help to know what apps you assume come preinstalled - trying to remember and I don't recall any that were "preinstalled" to the point of functioning when I first turned the fire on - but, I would check with kindle support to be certain on that one.

If you have registered the device to your accout and your lock screen does not look similar to this

then I do not believe you have a stock KF1.

You can name your Fire what you want to show in the left corner from the Manage Your Kindle web page.

Audible, IMDB, Pulse, Gallery and Shop were all pre-installed I believe.

Okay if you want to be a jackass don't waste your time replying to my post I was just giving a description of it because I don't know anything about them. But anyway Audible, IMGB, Pulse and shop are not on the device. I bought it used. The system loaded on it is android 4.1.2. And my lockscreen looks nothing like that. However, mostly everything looks like what in this link except for for the lock screen I can only slide it to the right.

Aaron - Sounds like you bought a rooted Kindle Fire. The previous owner has installed a non-stock OS. The Fire might work, and it might not. It did void any warranty that might have been left though...

Perhaps this will work to remove rooted files-> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1349652

Then, you can get the last version of the 1st gen Fire software here-> http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_k6_updatesi?nodeId=200790620

I haven't ever done this, so lots of luck!

Then, if you wanted an actual Kindle Fire, you got screwed. Which sounds like it might be karma.

Aaron...is there a settings option on your device? Perhaps you can reset it to factory defaults. Of course doing this will erase anything you have on it. Tap at top right, then on MORE, then on Device (3rd from last), then the last option (reset to factory defaults).

In Milwaukee says:
Or...if all else fails, try this: go to this page and download the Kindle Fire Basic software to your personal computer. Hook up the Kindle to your computer, download the Kindle Fire Basic software from your personal computer into the kindle folder.
Does anyone reading this board think this will work?

Aaron,
I bought two used devices for my grandchildren. I was ready to give up at one point because I'm not as computer savvy as lots of these board users are. Turn it on with the button on the bottom, slide the orange line to the left, tap on the right hand corner, tap on the "+" sign for more..., tap on Device (it's the 11th item down and you might have to slide the screen up a bit to see it), then slide the screen up again and tap on "Reset to Factory Defaults". Everything you own in the Amazon Store can be reloaded easily. If you have a 1st generation Kindle Fire, the software will say System Version 6.3.1. This is what I bought and it does not have an update yet. Good luck and don't worry. I have been playing with the Kindles for two weeks now and they are fun to have once you get by the beginning. It's hard to delete anything that cannot be reloaded unless you delete from your Amazon page.
