Liz Michael says:
I am really annoyed that although Amazon Kindle allows sales to South Africa you do not allow purchases. Subsequently I sit with a machine which is quite close to useless. I was never informed that I would not be able to purchase items. What do you have against South Africans!

CBRetriever says:
Amazon does not sell or ship Kindle Fires except to residents of the following countries: the US, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain or Japan. This is because they only support them in those countries. if you bought a Kindle Fire in South Africa, you either bought it from a third party seller or used some kind of shipping service to send it from the US to South Africa.

A quick look at the product page would have shown you these lines:

*In Stock.
*Ships from and sold by Amazon Digital Services. Important information about using outside the U.S.

and if you'd clicked on the last sentence, you would have seen this message:

*Want to use outside the US?

*If you're traveling with Kindle Fire, you can access any content you've downloaded to your device or shop for new books and magazines anytime you like.
*With a U.S. credit card, you'll also be able to purchase new apps and music for Kindle Fire while you are abroad.
*To purchase, download, or stream movies and TV shows, you must be physically present in the U.S. and have a U.S. billing address.

However, all is not lost, you can do like so many of us are doing and get apps from third parties. I highly recommend goodereader.com and 1mobile.com - getjar.com is another good source. There's an excellent how-to (no rooting required) video linked under the App Store FAQs on the goodereader site
