F. Balzano says:
Is there any way to lock your kindle via a computer so that if somebody stole it they can't simply de-register it and get a free kindle? Thanks!

Somebody says:
I don't know how to do it via a computer, but I did it by calling Amazon after one of my Kindles was stolen. They said no one else would be able to use it after they bricked it. I doubt, though, that it totally bricked it. Someone could probably side-load non-Amazon books.

They don't "brick" a Kindle in the way that many think they do. They will blacklist a stolen/lost Kindle, which will prevent someone else from registering it. The device will still work, and the e-ink Kindles would still have any books that were downloaded on the device. The Fire would be wiped clean, I assume the first time someone turned on the WiFi. It could still be used as well, but not registered to Amazon.
