I keep trying to download PDF's from my University website and every single time it says "download unsuccessful". I've read up on old posts about this, but nothing works. I don't know if anyone knows anything new on how to fix this. Please help :(

PS. I have the Kindle Fire 1st Gen

T. Cook says:
What are you trying to download on, what speed are you downloading at, and does it download any part of the file before it gets to download unsuccessful, or does the download even start?
And have you been successful downloading it from a computer if this was on the kindle (to verify their file server isn't the problem and to verify what, if any, extra validation steps need to happen to be allowed to download)?

I'm using the stock browser, I'm downloading it at 3mps wifi (from home), and nope it says download unsuccessful maybe a second or two after I try it. I have tried downloading it from my computer, and it works fine.

I called amazon and they told me to download it from my computer and then transfer it to my kindle, but I'm usually on campus and don't have my computer with me, so it'd be a little annoying. I mean I guess I could deal with this problem by doing that, but I just want to know how others have dealt with it before I just do that /:

Also, I have 5 GB left of storage on it.

You'd have to talk to someone else at your University who tried downloading the PDF themselves.
Otherwise, like I said, if you try it on your computer, maybe you can see if there's some kind of pop-up/verification/something else that happens before you're allowed to download it.

G. Canova, I had the same problem with Martha Stewart Cooking School books purchased from Amazon. I went into Manage Your Kindle and downloaded them to my PC. It worked well.

I don't think these little devices handle downloading really large files well.

I have a similar problem with kindle fire HD downloading images. It used to work until silk was updated. I called the helpline and they said fully reboot the kindle. You loose all your bookmarks and game scores. It worked again for a few images and has now stopped. I am a crafter and often download images for inspiration or for use in specific projects. All I get now is download unsuccessful

The number of 'download unsuccessful' varies from day to day and from time to time on my Kindle Fire HD using the Silk browser. If it gets to be too much of annoyance I switch to the Dolphin browser and it will download with virtually complete success!

Tell me more about the dolphin. I was not aware that anything other than the installed browser was available. How do I install dolphin?

Are we looking beyond the obvious misspelling, or is that the joke and I just ruined it?

HAHahahahahah! Oh, the irony. The "obviuos" irony. You mean you're not being ironic?

You can get it, and other browsers, from places like or You'll need to enable the installation of 3rd party apps under your settings on your Kindle.

I also had similar problems. I went to the download directory and cleaned up many old files. Once I got rid of a bunch of old files, I can once again download from the web. Prior to this it appeared that I had plenty of flash space. But I am guessing too many file handles was the real issue, even if the stats showed lots of space.
