Mary Edwards says:
My Kindle 3 completely died after a year & half. The screen went frozen and couldn't be fix. I just got a Kindle 6" Ink Display. What can I do to make sure that it last longer than a year and half.

Well, a case might help. Also do not subject your Kindle to rough treatment, get it wet, and try to keep it clear of dust, dirt, and sand.

Keep it in a sturdy cover.

Don't place anything heavy on or against the screen.

Don't step/sit/stand/sleep on it.

Don't let your dog anywhere near it.

My K2 (2-1/2 years old) and my K3 (1-1/2 years old) are still working great, thank heavens.

The sturdier the case, the better. Also, don't carry it in a backpack or anywhere it might get pressure on it, unless you have it in an extremely good case (one that prevents any of the pressure from being applied to the kindle).

Mary, another idea is to buy the extended warranty on it. Amazon offers one, as does SquareTrade. Two years ago I spent $30 on a SquareTrade warranty for a Kindle 2. Last summer it developed a screen problem and they put a $189 gift card on my Amazon account. That was one $30 bet that paid off! :-) If you want to do this, act soon. Both only give you a limited window after purchase to buy the warranty.

I know some people are still using 4 and 5 year old K1's and K2's but suspect that the average useful life for most Kindles is only a couple of years. I'm on my 8th Kindle since the K1 came out in 2007, three of which have been warranty replacements. Most haven't actually died. I've given them away as I've upgraded to newer models and don't know if they're still in service. I always keep two e-ink Kindles on hand for my own use and currently have a Basic and a Paperwhite. Both receive heavy use and are kept in cases at all times.

They've survived numerous falls and other abuse but aren't indestructable and don't last forever. They're relatively inexpensive. As much as I use them and and as much pleasure as they bring me, I'm more than satisfied with replacing them every couple of years.

My 2 cents: I have learned to protect my Kindle from heat, eg dont leave in your car on a hot summer day, and protect from sand, dust and dirt. I read mine at the beach frequently as a precaution anytime i set it down I wrap it in a simple plastic page protector to help keep sand out and I put it away in the beach bag (so it doesnt roast in the sun).
