Kindle Fire HD - Gmail and Dropbox

I was preparing to purchase a Kindle Fire HD for my wife when I read a review that made me think twice. http://www.businessinsider.com/apps-you-cant-get-on-the-kindle-fire-hd-2012-9?op=1

I was especially disappointed to see that two very prominent services, Gmail and Dropbox, are not available on the Kindle Fire. Are there any Kindle Fire users who can comment on these services on the Kindle. Are you able to work around the limitations?

Thanks,
Ron

I use the pre-installed email app and it works with Gmail just fine. Also sideloaded the drop box app with the same results.

R. Hammer,

Same here. Dropbox is available as a sideload. If you're not familiar with that process, just google "side loading Kindle Fire HD." It's a relatively simple process, does not require rooting your device, and does not void your warranty.

As for gmail, I think the confusion here is that Google's native gmail application is not available from Amazon. It's possible to sideload it, use the Amazon email client app pointed at gmail, or use a third party app in much the same way. I use the "K-9" email client app available in the Amazon Appstore. It provides some features when used in conjunction with gmail that the native email client app does not, including multi-select deletes and more flexible management of gmail folders.

K-9 Mail

Thanks for all of the feedback. It has encouraged me to go forward with getting this tablet for my wife. I appreciate your input.

RaeCharlesL - If you want to play AVI files on your Fire, I recommend MoboPlayer. You can get it from 1mobile.

You will have to update the device settings on your Fire to allow installation of applications (from places other than Amazon) before trying to install it.

I have MoboPlayer on both my 1gt Gen Fire and my Fire HD and love it.

I also have no trouble with Gmail and Dropbox on my Fire HD. The built in e-mail app works fine with Gmail.

John,

It should not be a problem. Are you certain that you have properly selected upper or lower case for your password? You may find that if your password is a known proper name the keyboard is (or is not) capitalizing it properly.

Kindle Fire is not refusing your password -- gmail is.

I have to revise my statement about Gmail working fine with the Fire's email app. It was working fine *at first*. After a few weeks, it would not pick up new messages. I could log in through the web interface and see the new e-mails, but they didn't show up on the e-mail app (this happened with two different gmail accounts). Then, all of a sudden about a month's worth of e-mail disappears from one account. I deleted my accounts from the e-mail app and tried the Android app on the Fire with a few tweaks. That worked fine, but it would cause my settings menu to disappear sporadically. After a few weeks of that, I un-installed the Gmail app, and now I am back to using the native e-mail app, but I've created another account, especially for sending email to my Kindle Fire.

The Gmail app is okay but I like to see it the way it normally looks.
The safest only half-simplified mode for quicker tablet access and easier navigation is via basic html mode using the web browser.

I made a shortcut for gmail in that mode and you can see what it's like with http://j.mp/gmailbasichtml

I'd like to know what other people think of accessing Gmail that way on a smaller tablet.

You can convert .avi files to .mp4 files and they will play fine. Google "convert .avi files to .mp4 files".
