i have the kindle 3. keyboard type. i have aprox 500 books on it. when i read a book it is fine. but when i go back and forth to the index and turning a pg, it is very slow. it is fully charged and just trying to go up and down with cursor, i press it and it takes maybe 20 seconds before it does anything. then if i press another function, i have to wait again, before it moves. it was not like this before.

Try rebooting your Kindle: Make sure it's charged, unplug it, slide and hold the power switch for a full 30 seconds (time it), then release the switch and leave it alone for a few minutes while it restarts.

Also, Marilyn, many have noted that the Kindle does seem to slow down in proportion to the number of books on the device. As ALL the books remain in he Amazon "Cloud" (always available to you from their servers), you might be able to speed things up by deleting many of those books from the device and then restarting it.

Also - a process of indexing goes on in the background which can slow down the process. To check to see whether the kindle is stuck trying to keep indexing a specific book or two, type in a nonsense word ("ztrgfvdfn" for example) and press the menu key. After a while it will tell you how many of your books have that word in it, and it will also say how many books are not yet indexed. If that line indicates one or more books, click on that line and it will tell you which books are not yet indexed. Oftentimes, if those books are deleted from your device and re-downloaded, the indexing process will work itself out.

My Kindle has also slowed down to snail's pace when cross-referencing to dictionaries etc. I have only a handful of books on mine and I have rebooted.

Mine's quite old (4-5 years). Maybe it's just coming to the end of its life?

Re-edit : Aha! I didn't hold the button in for long enough so didn't get the KindleTree bootup. Needs 20 secs at least. All sorted now!

Is this an e-ink Kindle? If so, how many books do you have on it?

They really can slow down if there's a herd of books on there. You might consider deleting some of them.

What some do, and it's a little drastic, but sort of refreshing as well, is to reset the device to factory defaults and start over, only downloading what titles they need imminently.

I can tell you that it made a world of difference in my Kindle Keyboard.

One thing you might want to do is a factory reset. You will need to register the device once this is done and download the books again. A lot of times that will clean everything out and make it like new. I recommend doing this to all computers and computing devices once a year.
