If you want to be certain that someone from Amazon hears your feedback, please send an email to kindle-feedback@amazon.com or kindle-fire-feedback@amazon.com if you have a Fire - we are mainly Kindle owners here, not from Amazon.

There are Eink Kindles out there that can play audio. Problems is they are all old models that are no longer sold by Amazon as they have been discontinued.

The Paperwhite is new technology which cost more than the previous models so they wanted to keep the cost down so they did not include audio on it.

New models comes out in the fall, hopefully there will be a new Eink model with speakers for those who need it.

As Bixillarla said - patience. Speakers increase cost, thickness and weight, and drain battery faster so that it needs to be bigger. Now that Amazon has PW technology down pat, I would also expect return of at least one audio-enabled e-ink model.

Sorry I don't agree with you. All models of Kindles do not have to all have the same functions. I personally only want to actually read on my Kindle and don't need the extra weight of speakers or the added costs.

I got into audio books via my kindle and Audible offers. While I now prefer using an mp3 player for audio books, I still think that - from a marketing/cross-promotion perspective - releasing an audio-capable e-ink kindle would be of benefit to Amazon.

I agree - I never even considered audiobooks until I tried some freebies on FireHD.

Not directly related to OP, but I think that Amazon would do well to introduce a refund policy for audiobooks similar to that for Kindle books, because quality of narration varies wildly.

Eeeek, no. Audible's return period is one year.

ETA - for Audible members. I'm not sure what it is for nonmembers.

Ahem. I stand corrected, in the corner, face to the wall :o)

Edit: but you have to have some kind of membership in order to have that option, not just being a good Kindler, right?

Dragi, a membership option they don't offer publicly is Audible Light: $10/year, no included credits, no expiry on purchased credits. I got to it by doing the free trial then cancelling. First request to cancel, they said "are you sure? How about we offer you this discount?" I said no. They said " are you really sure? How about this discount plus this extra benefit?" I said no. Then they offered Audible Light, & I thought I could stand $10/year for the membership perks, so I said yes.

I heard rumor that they actually got rid of that...so if you had it you were grandfathered in, but its not available for new ppl
