Does it have maps and GPS? Are there Astronomy apps that work with GPS? Can you use a Star Walk app?

Janey, which Kindle are you asking about?

The Kindle Fire line has maps. The Kindle Fire 4G has a GPS. The other Kindle Fires use other kinds of location-based services, which may not be as accurate...but I would guess they might work for astronomy (where I would think that being accurate with in ten meters or so might be enough...I'm just guessing on that, though).

Thanks for the info. Are there any Astronomy apps that can be bought for the Kindle Fire 4G?

If I were interested in astronomy I would buy an iPad, especially if I was contemplating spending $500 for a Fire 4G. The best astronomy apps (such as Star Walk that you mention) are available only for iOS.

The 16GB ipad2 with 3G is $530; the 4G iPad 4 starts at $630. They have GPS, and the number of serious scientific apps available for the iPad is one of the things that sets it apart.

Also note that no Fire has a rear camera, which makes scanning the sky a bit difficult.

Here's a search for astronomy apps for the newer Kindle Fires:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_p_n_feature_two_brow_2?rh=n%3A2350149011%2Ck%3Aastronomy%2Cp_n_feature_two_browse-bin%3A5615008011%7C5615007011&bbn=2350149011&keywords=astronomy&ie=UTF8&qid=1354560185&rnid=3305697011

I agree with R.D. that the front-facing camera would be more difficult, if that's part of the functionality. If a site is essentially using augmented reality to, for example, draw a constellation on the sky, that would be harder with the Fire versus a tablet with a rear-facing camera.

The GPS in the Fire 4G is only for location based services at this time, not mapping. Some of the Astronomy apps may work. The rumor is that Amazon will implement Nokia maps on the Fire HD 4G when it becomes available - stress on "rumor."

Anyone know why the Kindle Fire HD has a GPS chip but GPS isn't available on it?

So can you get Star Walk on a Kindle Fire or not?

Not.

When I was looking at the iPad, etc. I found that there were no really good astronomy apps for Android. iPad has several good ones. Star Walk is one. Sky Safari is another.
