Calibre will support the books, and will do exactly what you are looking for. I do it myself all the time. I'm guessing that you may have tried to make the changes the wrong way or something similar. You have to copy the items from the Kindle to the Calibre library, make changes, and then re-send them to the device.

1. Open Calibre and connect your Kindle to the computer by USB. Wait a minute for Calibre to recognize the kindle (a 'device' icon will show in the main menu bar when it does).
2. Click on the Device icon in Calibre to view what's on your Kindle.
3. Highlight the items you want to change and right-click them, then select 'add to library'. This will copy them from the device to your Calibre library.
4. Click on the 'library' icon, and go to the Calibre library. Highlight each item and double-click (or press 'e') to open the metadata editing box. Make your changes, and save.
5. When you're done with all of them, highlight them in the Calibre library, right-click, and select either 'delete' or 'remove from device' (can't remember which it is, but you'll know it when you see it). When the next option box comes up, select 'remove matching items from device'. That will delete the items from the Kindle and leave them in the Calibre library. You need to do this as Calibre will not actually overwrite what's on the Kindle.
6. When the delete job finishes running, highlight the items in the Calibre library again, right-click, and select 'send to device' and then 'send to main memory'. That re-loads the updated versions onto your Kindle.
7. When you eject the kindle from the computer, the updated items will show on the home page.

To integrate all this with Calibre's Collections feature, you should check out the dedicated Calibre forum over on mobileread.com, and read up on the Collections feature. It works well, but it's way too much to explain here in a quick post.

Can I add my vote of thanks to SingleEyePhotos. I was just about to ask this very question when I came across this excellent post. When the money allows my Discworld Collection will contain 01 The Colour Of Magic all the way to 39 Snuff. :)

This work really well thank you. But my only complaint is that it removed all my bookmarks and notes.

Thank you!!!

That is because it is now a different file. If you went back to the original file, it would still have your bookmarks and notes.

Since when??? I've never paid for Calibre. You can donate if you wish but it's not a requirement.

Here is a link to the web-site - http://calibre-ebook.com/

If you check that website out, you will see in the upper right hand corner the OPTION to support calibre but on the download page no way to pay.

People are talking about using Calibre on a PC or in a web browser to organise their books, not as an app on the Kindle Fires

They still have to after locating a book on Calibre/their PC, then have to search and find it on their Fire - it does not organize apps on a Kindle Fire itself - try reading posts 2 & 3 again

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 9, 2013 7:38:48 AM PDT
There is an app called Calibre *Companion* that costs $2.99. That's not the program others are talking about here.

If it's any help (I can't be bothered with changing the titles through Calibre) I simply create a Collection for a Series and add a document listing the reading order. The complete process only takes a few minutes to complete and with the document stored in the Cloud I can download it to any new device.

I've just done that with a new (to me) series on my Paperwhite and the Collection, together with the books and the reading order also showed in the Collections of my Fire HDX within a few seconds.

What's the verdict on how this affects content syncing across devices? For example if you reload the book on your kindle with an updated title, will it then reflect on other devices (such as Kindle Cloud Reader or a Kindle reading app on your phone)? Or would it cause any problems when trying to sync?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 22, 2014 2:28:10 PM PST
It depends on how you reload the book to the Kindle. If you copy it directly from your PC then no, it will not show up on your other devices with the new name. You would have to use one of the Send to Kindle methods through Amazon in order for it to be stored in your Amazon library/cloud/archive.

I've been using Calibre to store and manage all of my ebooks, both Amazon and non-Amazon, for several years and it is by far the best way to manage your ebook library, particularly if you have a large library or a lot of ebooks from non-Amazon sources.

Found Quilting is correct about syncing. If you change the title, you need to upload the new title to Amazon's cloud in order to sync it with your other devices. However, keep in mind that you'll have two different copies of the book in your cloud, the original and the one you uploaded with the changed title, so be sure you choose the new title in order to sync. I don't advise deleting the original from your cloud or you'll permanently lose access to it and to any possible future updates.
