This topic may have come up before, but I was wondering if any of you use Coinstar to obtain Amazon gift cards, and then use the gift cards to purchase Kindle books. How do I apply them to my Kindle account? Thanks.

Make sure the coinstar you are going to visit gives out Amazon gift cards. You can check the coinstar website to do that.

Once you've gotten the GC, click on the "Gift Card" link right above the search bar and you can add it to your account.

I do it all the time.

First, be sure the CoinStar machine you use is one that offers the Amazon GC option. You can go to the CS website to find the ones near you that do.

When you put the coins in the machine, it will print out a receipt with a GC number on it. (Note: This option gives you 100% of the amount you put in - no fee charged.)

Log onto your Amazon account. Choose Apply Gift Card. Type in the number from the receipt and click on Apply.

That's it.

I've done it once. Make sure your coinstar offers the Amazon cards. You get a little slip of paper with the gift card numbers/code on it, which you enter here on Amazon. It's easy peasy.

Your Account...under Payment, Apply a Gift Card to Your Account.

Thanks for your helpful replies! This will help a great deal with my Kindle book budget. I have accumulated a lot of coins over the last couple of years, instead of having them lying around the house, it would be great to be able to use them to purchase Kindle books.

I had no idea you could get giftcards from coinstar...thanks !!

I tried using a coinstar machine that was located in a walmart and it didn't offer the amazon (or other merchants either for that matter) option. Only a walmart/use at the register certificate which i presume is essentially cash but with the 7 or 8 cents per dollar taken out, or you could donate to charity. So just don't try it at a coinstar located in a walmart.

Other than that it works like a charm, no fee for the certificate option as was mentioned ---just a $5.00 minimum for the coinstar machine.

Hi Veronica Pearl!
I just came across a HUGE jar of coins in my grandparents garage that my grandmother let me keep as my fee for helping her clean it out! (I got cake too, but that's another thread!). I've already blown my book budget for July so I will be heading to the CoinStar machine today!

Thanks, Jed. With all the coins I have lying around in various purses, cans, jars, in my car, and in my desk, I'm sure I'll have more than the $5.00 minimum! I'm going to use a Coinstar at a grocery store and I checked the website and it does offer gift certificates. I'm dying to see how much the total of all my coins is!

Hi JustDenice,
Good for you! With a jar of coins that huge, I'm sure you will have the $5.00 minimum that the Coinstar machines require, too!

Veronica, very welcome of course- ... i think it's just walmart that doesn't allow coinstar to offer other merchant's certificates.

i sort of hope you might have gone through the huge jar of coins...i mean it was there awhile perhaps?

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 13, 2011 10:54:30 AM PDT
I don't have one huge jar of coins. I have two small jelly jars with coins in them, and about 3 or 4 cans that once contained walnuts but are now filled with coins. (I use them to store coins because they have a nice plastic lid.) And every time I switch from one purse to another, I leave the coins in the purse and store it in my closet. I'm not an organized person, I have coins scattered all throughout the house and some in my car. So once I gather them all together, I'm anxious to see what the total is and how many Kindle books it will buy!

Coins that are really damaged will be spewed out by the machine, as will Canadian coins. I had some dimes that were mangled for some reason, and they were rejected.

I don't usually go into the bank, maybe twice a year, but I am at the grocery store every week so that is way more convenient.

On two occassions I tried to get my amazon gift card and for whatever reason the machine couldn't process it. (I've had a number of times all was fine.) The upside....I rec'd a voucher for the full "processing" charges.

Oh, and a couple of times a year they have a deal going where you get an extra $10 Amazon card if you convert a certain amount of coins to a gift card. I got that just before Christmas. I will save my coins until the next special offer, or Christmas, whichever comes first.

Some banks won't take coins unless they are rolled and marked. Those of us who toss our spare coins into a jar generally don't have even amounts to roll, and don't need the extra trip to the bank. You have to actually go in when you have rolled coins, you can't use the drive up either. I only need to go IN the bank perhaps twice a year, and I rarely even use the drive up.

I do go to Giant Eagle a few times per month, so stopping at their Coinstar isn't an extra errand for me.

I don't want to take the time to sort all my coins, count them, and roll them up, then make a trip to the bank. I'd rather use them to get an Amazon gift certificate and buy Kindle books. No counting, just dump them in the coinstar machine!
