Kobo Mini deeply discounted

I know there are folks who'd like to see a mini Kindle, but this may be an option. I picked up a Kobo mini today for $40 for my son to use to read library books this summer. He has a Fire but wants to try e-ink and there's no way I'm giving up my PW. It's a small investment and if he likes it, there will be a Kindle under the tree this Christmas.

So.Damn.Cute.

ETA: Even their store looks nice, too. Also lots of freebies, which they actually have a full tab for; lots of first-in-series freebies so you can try one.

I'd have to hide it from my kids, or they'd send me away. Luckily, it's so small and easily concealed. ;0)

Seriously. It's a sickness.

ETA: Okay, I'll tell you what. If I sell or give away one of my KKs, can I buy the itty bitty Kobo-cutie?

Another good reason to live in Australia. The $99 tag is high enough to counter the temptation!

How many coffees would you need to not drink to give you $40? Not many!

I already don't buy coffees (not having a coffee house in our little town saves me big bucks, there). Hmmn...what else to forego...?

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 1, 2013 6:13:17 AM PDT
Bread, perhaps. Surely an ereader is more necessary to life? :-)

I'm lucky, I guess. My addiction is much more specific. If it doesn't say Kindle, it doesn't tempt me.

I don't need anything right now, but like Folina I have perused the Kobo site and have been impressed with both the offerings and the prices, in general. At some future time, I would like to have a hands-on with some Kobo models - although I don't think that's very likely in the US as most of their devices seem to be web-only for us.

Give one of KKs (left registered to your account, of course) to a Kindle-less friend, and you are permitted to add a Kobo to your collection :o)

I'm tempted by the cute little Kobo, but I really want a PW. This late in the year, though, I'm trying to hold out until September in case they announce new Kindles.

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 1, 2013 7:13:28 AM PDT
Fair enough. Now I just need to poll my friends and see who needs reading material.

It's super duper cute. We've already got a few $2 kids book deals from the Kobo store--so far so good. It's so light and easy to use. It's only day two, but he seems to be enjoying it so far. Did I mention how cute it is? He might end up getting a Kindle sooner than later--I'm such a sucker for small and cute.

That's what's getting me. "OMG! Look how teeny!! So *cute*!"

Yep, yep. :0)

Oh, man, that is too stinkin' cute. If I could read Kindle books on it, I'd probably buy two...

That is cute. I'd like a white one.

I'm tempted to get one for Overdrive ePub books from my library where I cannot get a Kindle version of books. Has anyone used a mini? How does it compare to a Paperwhite?

Jay says:
The low price is because it is crap that no one wants, and the Kobo is going the way of the Nook...to e-reader Oblivion. It has a limited array of ebooks available, you can't share passages, or lend ebooks, with it, and it has an annoyingly small screen. It has a list price of $79.00...as much as a Kindle Basic without The Basic's great features, or Warranty, or Customer Service. It can only sell as a 'loss leader' by dropping the price to 'taking a loss on it' levels, and hoping that when you buy it you will also buy enough other things on which the seller can make enough of a profit to make up for the loss taken on the Kobo Mini. They couldn't pay me enough to take one off their hands.

Wrong on both counts.
