I have the first basic kindle reader, and recently it started acting erratic. Now all it will do when I tap one of my books (to open it) is take me to the last (share you've finished....) page. Now afraid to order any new books...and was unable to order thru my kindle store for last weel also. Lots of quirks all at once...HELP!! Tim N.

My guesses would be either
1) it's full, and you need to delete some books
or
2) it needs rebooting (hold the power buttong in the ON position for 30 seconds - time it - then let it go and wait a few minutes while the kindle restarts and repopulates your home screen)

Fud53 says:
My guess is that it's a book you've already read and since a kindle always goes to the last page you've read when you click on a title...well if you can't see where the problem is then it's not a kindle problem, but a kindle owner problem.

No idea what you mean by "(share you've finished....)".

Why put "help" in caps when you haven't even contacted amazon's customer support? And it'd be nice if you asked politely.

Timothy - Put Fud on ignore. Everyone else has.

And, of course, it'd be nice if Fud *answered* politely! But he never does, so it's best to ignore him. (I'm surprised he doesn't know about the "share you've finished this book" - obviously he's never paged right to the end of a book.)

I must admit my first guess was the same as his, but then I figured you said 1) it's started acting erratically recently, and 2) you haven't been able to order from the kindle store recently.

If you go to the home screen and click the menu button, you should be able to see somewhere on the bars that open up at top/bottom something that says how much free space you've got. You could post that here, which most of us could then use to judge how full your kindle is.

But rebooting will fix a multitude of other weird quirks.

I have 109 books downloaded on my kindle. (Basic reader kindle) I cannot access the kindle store to order, and when I tap on a book to open it, kindle goes to the "share you've read this book" page. I did a reboot last nite and nothing changed. If the kindle is full, how do I delete books to get more room....there are a couple of duds I could get rid of. Tim N.

bookworm, thanks for your time and answer...but....there is nowhere on my basic kindle that tells how full the kindle is. It does say I have 109 books stored now. Tim N.

Timothy, from the Home Screen on your Basic, tap the Menu button. Look to the upper left corner of the screen. It will show you there how much space is free.

Meya, Nope, just shows "tims' Kindle" in the upper left corner. Below is the back arrow and the shopping cart. I'm sorry if I'm being dense, but it just isn't there. I do appreciate any help I can get tho...thanks. Tim N.

CBRetriever says:
after and while you have the menu open?

anyway, just tap the menu button when you have the book open, select Go To and then Beginning

and then close the book and go to your Manage Your Kindle page (link under Your Account on upper right of this page) and use the Actions button next to all your books to Select Clear furthest page read and all your books will open at the beginning

Are you going to the Home screen first (get out of the book you reading) and then pressing the Menu button?

CBR, Yeah, just talked with TJ at customer service, and that how he was able to connect me to the 1st page of books. Said it may work itself out now. Thanks for the help...don't have an actions icon next to my books anywhere, but at least I can read again, YAY! Thanks for your time and help. Tim N.

@JUDY: It would help us to try to help you if you told us which model Kindle you have. But try one of the following:

For an e-ink screen Kindle: Try a hard reboot - hold the power switch in the 'on' position for 30 seconds (count them slowly) and then wait until the Kindle reboots - that will take some minutes. Unplug it from any power source and don't touch any keys until it reboots.

For a Fire: Try performing a hard reset on your Kindle Fire. Unplug the Fire from all power sources and then press and hold the power button for 20 seconds (count them slowly) and then release. Ignore any shutdown messages. After the device has completely turned off, press the power button to restart your Kindle Fire.

@Tim,

Might be a nit but if you are "tapping" the screen to do things on the Basic Kindle, there is a problem. That model doesn't provide such screen interaction. It has a 5-way controller.

Check your model again.

If the reset doesn't work, I had excellent success with the kindle C/S by phone. My basic kindle wasn't doing anything, and he got it up and running in about a 1/2 hour of phone time. And English was his 1st language (hate to sound prejudiced, but when you get old and hearing isn't as good, it helps).

I have a Kindle Fire 7-inch HD. Lately, when I delete books from the carousel, they are back when I turn on my Kindle again even if I have deleted them from the device. Any thing I can do to fix this short of restoring to factory defaults? Thanks.

Loy,

Did you try rebooting it? Hold the on/off button for 30 seconds and then turn it back on. This usually solves a lot of problems.

If that does not work you should contact CS and see what they say. Use the Contact Us yellow button on the forum page and then have them call you. They are very good at calling you quickly.

I have a basic kindle and whilst away from the uk turned on the aeroplane mode in order to save battery life. On return to the UK I turned the aeroplane mode off to download a couple of new books. Immediately my kindle froze and I was unable to move from the book list page. I have re-booted the device several times, it reloads but still wouldn't allow me to turn a page. I turned the aeroplane mode back on and it now works fine. Has anyone any ideas why this is happening and how it could be overcome. The kindle has 104 books stored and is about 18 months old. Thank you.

Have you tried rebooting as suggested above?
Are you sure you are connected to Wifi?

No, Pineapple, not everyone else has put Fud on ignore. I've noticed over the years that those who whine the most about being nice, rarely are.
