Why can I not see most of my books on my amazon account when they are still available to me on my device?

Be sure you don't accidentally have two accounts.

Ah ha. Some of the older purchases were made on my husband's account which he initially used in setting up my kindle. I thought we had taken care of that when we linked the kindle to my account. Can we bring the books over too?

Books cannot be transferred between accounts. It violates the terms of use from the publisher. If you have an e-ink Kindle (not a Fire), you can register the Kindle to his account, download the books on to the Kindle, de-register and register back on your account. The books will stay on the Kindle, but will never be in your cloud for your Amazon account.

WOw. So, if I want to read my books on an updated reader or my phone (as I do want to) I can't? They were purchased to this one device? If I want to read them on my phone, I must repurchase them? (I'm logged on to his account, looking for my books and there they all are!) Grrrrrr.... ~Grafted Branch

No. Not device, ACCOUNT. The books belong to your Amazon account. You can add more devices/Kindles to your account at any time.

You can read the books from his account on one device and the books from your account on another device or reading app, but you cannot combine accounts or have a Kindle or device registered to two accounts at the same time. Additionally, you can always use the Kindle Cloud Reader.

While not very convenient, you can de-register a device, a phone for example, from one account and register it to another account to read books purchased on that account - as long as you have access to both accounts.
