Kindle Book Purchases with Reward Points?

Why can't I use my reward points for my Kindle purchases? Seems like it's because we have no other choice but to shell out actual cash to feed our Kindles, and Amazon knows this. Before my Kindle, I always purchased books with my reward points. Now, after having to pay for reading the last 6 months, I have decided to go back to paper because I have over $150. in rewards just sitting there! Doesn't seem fair, does it?

**Meya** says:
You can use points to buy physical Gift Cards from Amazon. When you receive the card, apply it to your account. All 1-Click purchases, which Kindle books are, will then pull from that amount.

Don't know why we can't, but there is a way around it. I use the points to buy Amazon gift cards (the kind that have to be mailed to my physical address) and then apply those cards to my account.

The three down sides:
1) It takes a couple of days to receive the gift cards.
2) My husband will mistakenly use the gift card money on other purchases.
3) The gift card minimum is $10.

But it's been a pretty good compromise for me.

J. S. Sperling says: "Why can't I use my reward points for my Kindle purchases?"

Because rewards points are only usable for items that are purchased through the full cart system. They can not be used on any 1-Click purchase no matter what it is. (and all digital content use the 1-click system) The way around it is to use the points to buy cards mailed to you, making sure to use the full cart system, don't hit on the 1-click button when in the first part of the checkout either.

The reason they can't be used on 1-click purchases is because it is designed for just that, 1-click and done. You have no choice in how to pay, it will always first use any promotional credit, then gift card balance, then the card set up for 1-click. If it was set up to also use points then it would inevitably end up using the points a few cents at a time depending on how often a person purchases using 1-click.

"Back in the day", Amazon used to automatically send your reward points by snail mail. You would get a letter that listed the points and the number needed to apply them to our account. Your reward points had to have a minimum value of $25 before Amazon sent you a letter. It was just like getting a gift card that you apply to your account.

Last year, when Amazon decided to allow us to use our reward points immediately, no matter the value, they stopped sending reward announcements. Mr. Palmer does a good job of explaining why this meant that reward points cannot be used for 1-click purchases.

The work around described by other posters is a little clunky, but worth it. And, you don't have to wait until your balance reaches $25.
