 Ann says:
That usually means that the battery monitoring software can't determine the current state of the battery. A reboot should clear it up. Make sure the device is charged, unplug it, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds (ignore the shut down prompt), release, then press power once to restart.

The reboot fix is only a rumor. My Kindle has finally started taking a charge today after 5 weeks of being plugged in. This is the first I've been able to use it completely untethered from a power cord since January 20th. Customer Service has been great, and they sent me a replacement, but the replacement was doing the same thing, so I sent the replacement back.

My kindle has had the same problem for months now. It is a first generation kindle fire and I haven't had any problems out of it up until now. My warranty expired two months ago and I contacted Customer Service and they tried to reboot the device but the same question mark was still there. I don't want to have to purchase another device which was suggest to me by the agent because this one was working perfectly fine. (then out of the blue one day it stops charging and gives me the question mark) I'm totally at a lost at this point and I willing to take any other suggestions that people may have that have had this exact same problem in past times.

Try adding a battery meter, such as Battery HD .

Will the following app just give me the battery life span as far as percentage goes? I still have to find a way to get rid of the question mark over the battery icon in order to get it to charge. If I unplug it now the kindle will just power off and can not be utilized if the charger is not plugged in.

I dunno, dude. I'm not an app developer. I just have the thing on my Fire, and it seems to work. It's a free app; try it and see if it does what you want. You can always delete it later.
