Why Do You Read ? ? ?

Relaxation, Escapism, Knowledge, Entertainment
For many of us all or a combination of these apply. And our reasons for reading are our rewards.
But did you know that there is an actual list of benefits from reading? According to a life development web site
there are 8 Benefits of Reading (or Ways Reading Makes You Better at Life)

1. Enhanced Smarts

Wow, this may be the most obvious statement of the post, right?
Well, it turns out that reading helps in almost every area of smarts. Those that read have higher GPA's, higher intelligence,
and general knowledge than those that don't. In Anne E. Cunningham's paper What Reading Does for the Mind , she found that reading,
in general, makes you smarter, and it keeps you sharp as you age.

2. Reading reduces stress

When reading a book, our minds shift gears. Where I might have a had a stressful day, a book can easily distract me.
Fiction is fantastic for this. Reading an awesome fiction book is perfect right before bed time. Though sometimes it's hard to put the book down
if it's really good. Still, you'll be relaxed ;)

3. Greater tranquility

Reading can soothe like no other. If you are a high-energy person, reading forces you to sit and be still.
This daily act of making yourself be quiet and still reduces your anxiety and delivers a more tranquil state.

4. Improved analytical thinking

Studies have found that analytical thinking is boosted by reading. Readers improve their general knowledge,
and more importantly are able to spot patterns quicker. If you can spot patterns quicker, your analytical skills receive a boost.

5. Increased vocabulary

It's no secret that reading increases your vocabulary and improves your spelling, but did you know that reading increases your vocabulary
more than talking or direct teaching? Reading forces us to look at words that we might not have seen or heard recently.
In fact, the language in children's books are likely to be more sophisticated than your average conversation.
Knowing what other people are saying and using the perfect words to convey your feelings is a critical
part of being a better human. Better listeners are more successful in life.

6. Improved memory

If you have an awful memory and usually can't remember what you've eaten for breakfast, let alone things like names and addresss.
You will find that you will remember stuff much easier when you have been reading consistently.

7. Improved writing skills

Since reading improves vocabulary and critical thinking you will find yourself a better writer too.
That's why English classes in High School make you read "the classics". That's why art students learn to copy masterpieces
So that you will know what creating something incredible should feel like.
The more you read, the better of a writer you'll become.

8. Helps prioritize goals

Often times we're certain that we know what we "really want" in life. But then reading shows us things that we didn't know about ourselves.
Our minds can drift to things that we'd really like to do, and it isn't long that these little lapses in reading start to cycle.
This helps us to define our goals and place them in an appropriate order. Reading gives you a chance for your mind to wander. No time? No money?
If you think that you don't have enough time to start reading, you're wrong.
There's really no excuse to NOT start reading on a regular basis. The benefits far outweigh the costs, and more knowledge never hurt anybody.

Great start KayKay! Very interesting info on why we read.

I'll be back a little later to answer the question of the day. I'm still playing catch up. I thought for sure I was going to have to have one of the boys drive me up to McDonalds to post the cake and the Links open. It's been an interesting day.

Why do I read? For all of the reasons that I listed, relaxation, entertainment, bit of escapism and of course sometimes just for knowledge. I am a somewhat eccleptic reader because I read from different categories. Mystery, bios and memoirs, thrillers, sci-fi, paranormal, romance - if a book sounds interesting to me I will give it a go. That's one reason I love to hear everyone share here. I find some really good books that I otherwise might have missed. Thanks for sharing.

@ KayKay
My memory is not the best, never has been, I obviously don't read enough, mostly read in bed and fall asleep over the book/kindle, but I am reading more since I discovered FB&C.
I grew up in a house full of books and my mother read stories to us at bedtime and also grew up before TV, we didn't get one until I was about 17, so books were an integral part of my youth and still are, but seems I am better at collecting them than getting down to reading them ;-)
Weather looks fine today so I will make it to work dry today too yeah, and today is Friday a weekend ahead - all is well

Happy birthday Rocky!

Hi Kay Kay, this is a great topic of discussion! I read simply because I enjoy it. I have a busy life so reading is my down time. Also, whenever I have down time, I read... Reading is also keeping me company during sleepless nights... Like tonight ;-)

Yes I know and love it - the worst problem with reading is having to choose the next book to read - so many in one's library - and having to choose this one before that one, or perhaps that one, or yet again perhaps ......

I loved this series and highly recommend it.

Gone to Green: The Green Series #1 (Green (Abingdon Press)) - Contemporary Fiction

In Gone to Green, Lois goes from being a corporate journalist at a large paper in the Midwest to the owner of The Green News-Item, a small twice-weekly newspaper in rural North Louisiana. The paper was an unexpected inheritance from a close colleague, and Lois must keep it for at least a year, bringing a host of challenges, lessons, and blessings into her life.

When Lois pulls into Green on New Year's Day, she expects a charming little town full of smiling people. She quickly realizes her mistake. After settling into a loaned house out on Route 2, she finds herself battling town prejudices and inner doubts and making friends with the most surprising people: troubled teenager Katy, good-looking catfish farmer Chris, wise and feisty Aunt Helen, and a female African-American physician named Kevin.

Why do I read? I guess the short answer is to escape. Escape from the stress, disappointment or just tiring day into a world with new exciting adventures, or at least a new set of challenges and scenery to take in. My favorite books become like my comfort food - a familiar place to go to wind down and relax or celebrate.

OK, local tv just reported study advising hot chocolate is good for the brain! Just love the endorsement of chocolate of any kind! Time to go make some and improve my brain! Happy Friday all!

Alice's Summertime Adventure by Suzanne Jenkins

Publication Date: June 6, 2013
We meet Alice Bradshaw when she is at a crossroad. She's just beaten cancer and is suddenly unsure of what her next move should be. Looking back on where she's been and what the future may hold, she knows she needs to make a big change in her life. Then her car dies on the highway after an argument with her daughter. Dave, a stranger on a motorcycle, pulls along side her and saves the day. He offers Alice a chance at adventure. She jumps on it, much to the dismay of her children. The adventure starts a chain of events that will have Alice and her children, as well as Dave questioning every aspect of their lives. There will be a few casualties along the way, a lot of anger, life changes and a few shocking surprises. Alice's Summertime Adventure is the story of an average American family as they struggle with dilemmas we all have, and making choices that aren't for everyone.
