You shouldn't have bought it, you're right. It's almost pointless outside the U.S. I hope you can return it.

maybe Amazon should have advised that kindle fire is only meant for US market before selling this product. why are they advertising kindle fire to the rest of the world? so misleading.

if you'd looked on the product page, under the price you would have seen this line and read it: Ships from and sold by Amazon Digital Services. Important information about using outside the U.S. and clicked on the last sentence you would have seen:

If you're traveling with Kindle Fire, you can access any content you've downloaded to your device or shop for new books and magazines anytime you like.

With a U.S. credit card, you'll also be able to purchase new apps and music for Kindle Fire while you are abroad.

To purchase, download, or stream movies and TV shows, you must be physically present in the U.S. and have a U.S. billing address.

granted it's not it big red, bold, flashing letters, but it does say Important Information

It says it right on the product page. They don't ship them to anyone out of the U.S.

From the Fire's (2nd Generation and HD) Support pages:

Kindle Fire Restrictions for International Customers:

At this time, we are only able to ship Kindle Fire 2nd Generation and Kindle Fire HD from to customers with a U.S. billing and shipping address.

Note that international customers are not able to purchase some types of content on Kindle Fire 2nd Generation and Kindle Fire HD and not all functionality is available for international customers. You must be physically located within the United States to purchase, stream, or initiate a download from Amazon Instant Video. Music purchases from are only available to U.S. customers.

**Also, from the Amazon App Store for Android Support pages:

Using Amazon Appstore for Android Internationally

At this time, we are only able to offer Android apps and associated content to our customers in the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, and United Kingdom.

To successfully purchase paid digital content from Amazon, the 1-Click payment method listed in Your Account must be a credit or debit card issued by a bank with a valid billing address in one of the supported countries.

I have no idea why you would have bought a device that is so limited in your home country. You really should have done some research.

How did you get it to South Africa, anyway? It's my understanding that Amazon won't ship a Fire to South Africa. That should have been your first clue. JMO.

Suggestion. If you have an iPad, download the Kindle application. Works well.......

Agent 99 says:
That will only work for the Kindle books on your account, not Fire content offered by Amazon.

You can buy Kindle e-ink devices in SA. Much better than reading on an iPad.
