I want to buy a kindle for my 8 and 9 year old. Which one is best and can they use it to go on school website?

I'd get the $79 Kindle. Easy to use and cheap. You really don't want kids to be able to roam the web without supervision. The Kindle is a book reader more than a web surfing device. It's not for visiting a school web site. A computer would be better for this. For encouraging kids to read, it's great. No need to get anything more than the basic $79 Kindle.

Get one of the e-ink Kindles. If your kids like listening to books (audiobooks or text-to-speech), you might want to consider the Kindle Keyboard or Kindle Touch. The $79 basic Kindle is a good choice for reading, but it doesn't have audio.

The Kindle Keyboard has audio. Thank You, that is good to know.

Agree wholeheartedly with you, 68 yr old grandmother.

So does the Kindle Touch. It's what I have...just got it a few days ago...and you can put MP3s on it for them to listen to while they're reading, too.

Non of the e-ink kindles are good for web surfing. It really drains the battery and is very very slow (at web surfing). It is a highly experimental feature and, trust me, your kids won't use it after they see how slow it is.

The Fire is a good web surfer but still not equal to a desktop / laptop / netbook.

Yes, the Fire is great. The kids don't have to read books. They can surf the net, play games, watch movies. Oh, yes, indeed, if you don't want the kids to learn the joy of reading, the Fire is perfect.

Get them the Kindle Basic or the Kindle Keyboard.

I think that the Kindle Touch is a good choice. It is small, interactive, and kids will enjoy the reading experience. No Regular Kindle, Kindle Keyboard, or Kindle Fire. Kindle Touch all the way.

Melissa, if you want your 8 & 9 year olds to read, get them the Kindle basic for $79.

If you want them to go to a school website get them a netbook.
