If the kindle is not in wifi can i shop for books on the laptop and download them to kindle, and later when the kindle is connected to wifi, will it automatically download? Or do I have to wait for the kindle to be in wifi?
thanks

T. Cannon says:
You can buy books from a computer at anytime and send them to the Kindle. They will show as "pending" until the Kindle has a wifi signal to download them. Or you can download them to your laptop and transfer them to your kindle via a USP cord if it will be a long time until you can get a wifi signal.

You can order from the computer and the books will download the next time you connect the Kindle to a wifi signal.

I have a wonderful Kindle 2nd Generation. Am I forced to scrap it?

Why do you think you would have to scrap it? I have a coworker still using her Kindle first generation from 2007.

Edith, please start your own discussion by clicking on the Ask a New Question tab below instead of hijacking someone else's discussion with a totally unrelated question. Thanks.

I hadn't intended to disrupt an existing discussion. I'll do as you ask.

Edith,

As long as it is working, enjoy it!

You don't even have to wait until the Kindle is near a wi-fi signal. You can select the "download to computer" option, and then there will be a question about which Kindle you're downloading the book for. You select the appropriate Kindle and the book is downloaded to your laptop (make sure you download it somewhere you can find it again! I usually choose my Desktop). Then you will connect your Kindle to the laptop using the USB cord and drag the book file to the "documents" folder you'll see when you "open" the Kindle drive (letter "D" or whatever is the next free drive letter on your laptop).

It takes longer to type than it does to actually do this. (-: Just throwing that option out there in case you don't want to wait until you're in range of a wi-fi signal if you don't have wi-fi at home.

I just can't get new books to read.

Why not, Edith? Again, it might be better to start a new thread and give a more detailed explanation of what you are trying to do and what's not working. I have a Kindle2 US (Sprint provides the 3G service) and it works just fine.

Thanks for your answers. I was on ATT towers. May be a problem between them and Amazon.
