Today is the first day of Zach's Spring Break. What memories do you have of Spring Break?

I lead a very sheltered life, got married right out of high school and didn't go to college until I was in my late thirties. So my memories of Spring Break are more from when I was in high school. Lots of reading, going to the mall with a friend and later working at a Dairy Queen.

Certainly some of you have more entertaining memories?

TLC Staycations for Spring Break

10: Backyard Camping
Set up tents in the backyard and have a backyard camping trip! Pack up your sleeping bags, fire up the grill, and grab a couple of flashlights and lawn chairs. Don't let anyone back in the house -- except to use the bathroom, of course. And leave your laptops, cell phones and handheld games behind. Remember, you're camping.
For dinner, have a cookout on the grill, and don't forget the s'mores for dessert. Once night sets in, organize some games with the kids. Try flashlight tag, tell ghost stories and even play board games by candlelight. Be creative! If you can, invite some of the neighbors and their kids over to camp as well. The more, the merrier.

9: Video Game Olympics
If the weather makes it impossible to get outside and you have a video game system, host a "video games Olympics." Choose video games that are short -- not long adventure games; otherwise, the people who aren't playing will get bored. Pick games like bowling, ski jumping and tennis.
If you plan out your video game Olympics in advance, you can set up tournaments and give out prizes or trophies to the top three finishers in each category. If you have a lot of people participating, you can even break everyone up into teams and wear team colors. Make it even more fun by setting up "fueling stations" with sports drinks, protein bars and fruit, so everyone feels like a real athlete!

8: A Day at the Movies
Another great indoor activity is a movie marathon. Plan your movie marathon beforehand. Will it have a theme, like alien movies or slapstick comedies? Or will each family member get to choose a favorite film? Since you're on "staycation," you could even choose movies that feature family vacations.
Then, go Hollywood for the day. Set up a red carpet in the TV room (you can use a red vinyl tablecloth). Hang up stills of classic movies and actors. Dress up as your favorite movie star or character and take "red carpet" photos of each other. To kick off the movie, toast each other with sparkling juice or cider. Settle in with lots of pillows and comfy seating. And don't forget the popcorn.

4: Organize a Scavenger Hunt
Scavenger hunts are lots of fun and bring out everyone's competitive sides. Depending on how adventurous you're feeling -- and how many adults you have for supervision -- your scavenger hunt can be limited to your backyard, your block or even your entire town.
Use your computer to print out clues, maps and goodies, and hide them places. The clues can be straightforward or written as puzzles or poems. A scavenger hunt is actually a great teaching tool for children because clues can contain simple math problems or local history questions. Leave little prizes along the way (candy, small toys) with one big prize for the eventual winner(s).

THESE WERE A FEW OF MY FAVORITES - TO SEE ALL 10: http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/family/10-spring-break-staycations.htm

ETA: This sounds like fun - for the little ones buy the disposable cameras, develop and let them make a collage, scrapbook page or poster.

Photo Scavenger Hunt - Spring scavenger hunts are always a fun way to reconnect with nature. Helping your kids search for the beauty and signs of Spring around you, they will come to appreciate the season more. And, you can teach them to use the camera. Always a helpful skill. This post gives you some ideas and themes for a Photo Scavenger Hunt and GoExploreNature.com gives you a great download of Spring-related items to hunt for. Here's a great post on how to lure your child into the fun world of photography.

Can anyone please explain how you can be so tired that you can't keep your eyes open, turn everything off and go to bed - and still be wide awake 2 hours later? I just don't get it. <LOL>

Crab cake recipe - a family favorite:

1 lb crab
14 saltines - finely crushed
1/2 small onion - finely diced
1 egg, beaten
3 splashes worchester sauce
3 splashes hot sauce
1T mustard
3T mayonnaise

Panko crumbs for breading.

Pick through crab for any shells.
Mix wet ingredients together. Add crab and crackers. Lightly mix together, keeping the crab as whole as possible.
Form patties. Coat with Panko crumbs.
Fry until golden brown.

This is a favorite vacation recipe for my daughter and me. We make this at the beach each summer. (and at home as well)

ETA - hi Leo. Yep, I'm still wide awake and bored. I was reading a great book this afternoon. Guess I'll use my PW and see if I can read myself to sleep. If now, I'll be b a c k!

The board looks especially pretty today :) I am loving the little hearts and things.

Lol, I would like an explanation too. Many times I go to bed that way and am still awake many hours later. I've always had trouble sleeping, though, even when I was a kid. Mostly I think I just don't need as much sleep as most people. Used to drive me insane before I accepted that.

SDR - my reply from yesterday (see - I am learning) re the young college lady - I heard about that - word gets around quick. I also saw a copy of the email. I feel bad for her too. It looks as though she used some sort of a software program, and that others are using it too. There was one reviewer who got the same exact letter from two different people. Only the names were changed.

Lol, personally I wouldn't have the guts to approach a reviewer. But then I have been lucky to get some good reviews since publishing so I haven't felt the need to. I even got one from a `Top 1000' reviewer which made my day.

When I first published I had offers for `review swaps'. I couldn't think of anything worse. What if I didn't like their book? The idea of having to tell them I couldn't review it honestly without negatively affecting their rating is horrid. I'm glad I just waited.
Um ... just one book - this is how one of the reviewers described it: `This book is a mash up of Survival fiction and a "Long Lost Couple" Romance' :) Thanks for asking - I'm a bit self-conscious about my writing still. Maybe when I have a gazillion reviews I will add it to my profile, lol.

I will have to watch out for that (Konrath!) My reading list is already growing and I don't need doubles.

Not quite that yet - I can only dream about selling that many at this stage. But it is getting a little closer every day :) 4000s doesn't actually mean a heck of a lot sales wise actually. Only about 30 a day. 2000s only means about 60 a day. Kind of sad when you think about it that way, means a lot of writers are making nothing.

Lol, maybe when I have a few more reviews up my sleeve :) A bit self-conscious about my writing still. Please don't take offence though. It is a bit of a weird quirk of mine - I find it weird when the people I am chatting to read my books. And I think it puts pressure on people once they know, especially if they buy it to be nice or because they are curious, because it can make it awkward later if that makes sense?? Like if they hated it and didn't know how to say so.

ETA - you are right. Some of them just jump on the bandwagon 'cause it is all fun and games to them. They never stop to think about how they make people feel.

FYI - Ellem had started a thread on a love/hate relationship with Freebies. There were a lot of haters out there and not just talking about the topic. They just got mean (IMO) and way to personal with their attacks.

IMHO, If we ask a question of an author,(such as what is your pen name) and they don't answer
then that is rude, HOWEVER, if they just say Hi, I'm a writer and my pen name is xxxxxx than
that would be self promotion..
