Asking for opinions from my Quirky friends, or any others who may help

I have come, over the last few years, to value the intelligence, compassion and experience of many on these threads. Hopefully I won't be removed for going OT; I can only try.

Anyway, this whole thing started yesterday (Monday) early morning. I've never been one for headaches, but had a doozy with a strong nosebleed (but not normal red blood, more like old, brownish blood.) Afterward, everything seemed to go OK until I started falling (or "crumpling") Don't you love the technicalities? Essentially, I would reach for something by the side of my bed or chair and couldn't stop the momentum; I have some spectacular carpet burn, extreme joint and body aches, etc.

I thought I'd ask if anyone has had similar experiences, and if they were able to put a name to what's going on with me. Not having medical insurance until April 1 I'm pursuing all avenues that might be open to me. Thanks.

You've fallen multiple times?
I know medical expenses in the US are horrible, but seriously, get yourself to some kind of medical professional...

Posted on Mar 12, 2014 4:40:42 AM PDT
Head CT or mri, NOW. SERIOUSLY. The Brown nosebleed is not good.

You need to get to a dr - this is not something that can wait til April.
Unless it's a popped blood blister (doubtful in the nose), brown blood (and the other symptoms) is not good.

Grimwinder says:
I've suffered from severe migraines and nose-bleeds all my life, and I concur with the others- get thee to a doctor ASAP. If you were just having one or the other it would be less worrisome, but the combination of symptoms you describe could be something very serious and life threatening. At the very least visit an Urgent Care facility if there is one near you (many large drugstore chains have "minute" clinics now too), they can at least evaluate you without it costing you as much as an Emergency Room visit. I hope it turns out to be nothing more serious than a ruptured minor blood vessel in your sinuses, but, again, with the symptoms you have you should seek care now.

Sarida says:
It says you are in Dallas. Get on the phone and start calling clinics or hospitals that can treat you without insurance. Frankly, you shouldn't be driving. It could be as minor as a sinus infection or something that could be life threatening. Please let us know what you find out.

I agree. Those are not symptoms to treat lightly or postpone investigating. Far better to be over-cautious than dead! (Ok, maybe that's a shade alarmist, but worst case scenario...)

And if there's nothing major that they find, get your vitamin D levels checked out. Severe deficiency of it can create all sorts of frightening symptoms, and lack of balance is a key one.

Heather, there are many symptom checkers online. I recommend WebMD and/or the Mayo Clinic. While of course not a substitute for medical advice, they have a lot of good information there.

Get to an ER stat! I'd rather be alive and safe with medical bills (which you can lower by speaking to the billing office) than suffering permanent damage or even death!

KessaJo says:
That's what I was thinking. Could be a sinus infection or something really serious.

Josue says:
I agree with the others, I would go straight to the emergency room with or without insurance. It may be nothing serious but it may be something very serious. Personally, I don't like the sound of it. I do hope all ends well.

Parkland Memorial is the hospital for the county hospital district in Dallas, and will work out payment arrangements. Their ER is yuck (at least it used to be) and be prepared to wait. But, better safe than sorry.

Heather, please let us know how you are doing.

Hopefully her silence means she's away being treated. Or at worst, sitting in an ER for hours somewhere waiting to be seen.

Posted on Mar 12, 2014 5:16:28 PM PDT
Heather, I am sorry I've just seen this. Everyone is right. Anyone who has the worst headache of their life should seek emergency treatment. Add to that the nose bleed and the falling and I am beside myself with worry for you. I pray that you are at the hospital now and are receiving the care you need.

Dang, somebody start a petition that every Quirker give some sort of emergency number to someone. I pray to whatever gods there be that Heather is getting attention and that is why we aren't hearing anything.

Trust me, I understand the horror of not having health insurance. I hope you got some medical treatment, though. Your systems don't sound good at all. I pray that you are okay.

I so appreciate everyone's concern. Fortunately, it seems to have been a one-time anomaly. My GP says everything checks out OK, just to keep an eye on my blood pressure. So sorry to have everyone upset, didn't mean to. I'm feeling OK now, even better now that I know everything's OK.

Love y'all !!!

ETA so sorry not to have posted before, won't happen in the future ;-)

Thank you so much for posting back.
So glad to hear it was a false alarm.

OR, I've never been to Parkland, but I have a friend who has; unless you're actively spouting blood from an artery, you can wait up to 10 plus hours. I'd rather go to a vet ;-)

Everything's OK now; thanks so much for your concern.

Glad to hear it seems OK. But since you have had this episode watch out for anything else unusual and get thee to a doc ASAP. With the financial situation don't convince yourself you are fine it will only make it worse.

Piney, I'm OK now, thanks so much! My GP and I have a good relationship in that she'll see me and now and defer the charges to when my insurance kicks in. Longevity counts in some things ;-)

I seem to be full of false alarms nowadays ;-) I so appreciate people caring, more than I can ever say.

I used to work in the hospital business. Parkland was a case study in how not to do things. Hopefully, they've improved some since that time.
