Will one of you please answer a question for me? Does the Paperwhite 3G show the book covers in your library or is it still a list of books sorted by author/title/most recent? I like seeing the book covers so I typically search for books on my iPad but I'd be very happy to hear that the new Paperwhite shows them too. I have an old Kindle (the Kindle2) so I'm looking to upgrade.

I'm really floating between wanting the new iPad mini (but the cost is so high!), the Paperwhite 3G and the 7" fire. I like the idea of getting a book anywhere/anytime so I'm concerned I'll not like the Fire and I don't want to spend $499 for an 8.9" Fire (might as well use the family's iPad2). Love the size of the Paperwhite to fit in my purse/pocket. Kind of rolling my eyes at the thought of buying an iPad mini so my daughter can text me from her Touch and I can search the internet while traveling but I have taken the family iPad2 on business trips and appreciated having it.

Just wish I could go to a store and try the Paperwhite 3G myself before waiting until December 21 for it to ship.

What are your opinions? I'd appreciated hearing your thoughts.

Only a little help here but although they are scarce some stroes do have Paperwhites in stock, and demo models. I would try Best Buy, Staples, and/or Office Max.

Paperwhite 3G will feel just like Paperwhite WiFi. So you can check it out now, perhaps.

The real question is, what do you want to do with it? If you want to just read, I think Paperwhite offers the best experience. But if you want to text and run apps and read the Internet, the iPad Mini or a Fire would be required. But reading won't be quite as nice (for most people).

Good luck!

I've asked if they have the Kindle Paperwhite at Target, Staples and Best Buy. I've looked for them at Costco and BJs but so far, no luck with either the 3G version or the wi-fi version. I really just want to know about the list of books in my library -- whether they're listed by text only or if you see the book cover. I figure enough people have a Paperwhite that someone will know the answer.

My Kindle2 only lists the books in my library by name and author (no book cover / photo) so it's hard for me to find a book as I might remember what it looks like but not necessarily its title or author. Also, my library takes approximately 48 pages in my Kindle screen -- that's a lot of clicking to get to the book that I want if it's written by an author with a last name that starts with R or if the book title begins with M (for example). Sometimes it seems like I just keep clicking and watching the pages flip. I was hoping for something similar to the iPad, where you just scroll and the books go by quickly.

If someone has a Paperwhite and can answer, I'd appreciate it.

You can display your books by Cover or Title on the Paperwhite.

Thanks -- based on price, I think that's what I'm getting for Christmas! I appreciate all of the posters and your suggestions!

The PW offers a choice of cover view or list view. Cover view shows 6 books/page while list view shows 7 books/page.

You've listed good choices. If possible, you might drop by stores that carry these devices and give them a test drive.

Maybe I'll brave the stores in the coming week or two and see if anyone has the Paperwhite (even without the 3G) to try yet. So far no one's had it but it might be more available now. I think, based on price between the PW and the iPad mini, liking the smaller size of the PW, and not really needing the iPad mini, I'll ask for the PW for Christmas.

Thanks again for all of your replies -- they are much appreciated!

LovesToRead: I was at a Chicagoland Best Buy a few hours ago, and although they do not have the Paperwhite in stock to purchase ("They've been out of stock here since they first came out," according to the salesman), they have two readily on display to play with. It's sweet! I have an iPad2 and although I enjoy reading on it, I am a Kindle fan (and will be getting a Paperwhite whenever they're readily available again). So, yea, try Best Buy for a demo model...I think they're in all stores as they have an extensive e-reader section now. Cheers!

Just remember that the 3G on the PaperWhite is not like having 3G on your smartphone.

Thanks again, everybody -- I appreciate the tips. Best Buy it is -- and Staples is right across the street if Best Buy doesn't.

Target and Amazon had a falling out. Target no longer sells Kindles. My daughter and son-in-law both work at Target and that's what they told me when they were visiting a week ago.

Loves to Read, did you know that you can create collections on your K2? You wouldn't have to scroll through 48 pages if you created collections.

You can also create collections on the PW. I played with it for a few days before I sent it on to a friend, and it was much easier to read than my K2i or my K3. I have floaters in my eyes, though, and the light of the PW did make them more noticeable, so I won't be getting the PW myself.

Kribu says:
The Paperwhite has a cover view, as said above (you can see one example screenshot here: or just google Paperwhite Cover View and look at the images for more examples).

A word of warning, though, depending on the style of the covers of the books you most often read - I was rather enthusiastic about it at first but keep turning it off in favour of list view these days, as I find it hard to make out the titles and authors on many of the small black and white covers and therefore it can be difficult to tell which book is which. (Not helped by e.g. reading many books in the same genre, or having sorted all books of the same genre into collections, as many covers with a similar layout can look virtually the same in such size.)

Also, if you only buy from Amazon, this is likely not going to be a problem, but if you sideload a lot of books (or use Send to Kindle or whatever, i.e. if you have a lot of "personal documents"), they all display with a small "Personal" banner on the bottom of the cover (similar to the "Active" banner on the screenshot I linked to above). It's not necessarily a problem but it can hide the title of the book, if the title happens to be across the bottom of the cover.

Other than those issues which may or may not be relevant for the OP, it's great to have that option on an eInk Kindle at last.

John D. says:
I'll echo what Kribu said: The cover view experience on a PW is not like that on an iPad. First is the screen. The PW screen is awesome for reading text, but not awesome for graphics. Covers don't look very good on it compared to a Kindle, and if you're depending on color cues, they're simply not present. Second, you won't find a smooth scrolling experience like what you're used to on an iPad.

So on the PW you simply cannot have the experience of a quick flick sending a parade of bright, recognizable covers scrolling past. If that's important to you, the PW is almost certainly not the device for you.

However, you COULD use your iPad as an index, find the book with that great color screen, then read it on the Kindle once you'd find the title and/or author. :)

BUY from Amazon. Don't buy from Staples or Best Buy. Just go in and look the devices over.

LTR says:
Thanks everybody. I've searched at Best Buy, Microcenter, Staples and more and at least where I am in the DC area, no one has the PW in stock in either version. It doesn't really matter though -- for the mega price difference, I'm going with the PW over the iPad mini. Like John D said, I can find a book title using my laptop or iPad then read it on my PW. Like the idea of the smaller size to fit in my purse.

Is there not a keyboard on the Kindle Paperwhite? Sorry, I haven't shopped for one, yet.

It's a touch screen therefore has a virtual keyboard instead physical keys.

noticing the battery not lasting very long, also the backlite remains on all of the time, could this be the reason?

Agree. I like to see not only the cover but jacket notes. I often read several books at a time, and a quick content reminder would be great. I also look them up on my iPad.
