There is color e-ink technology, but at this time the price would be more than what companies (obviously, since it hasn't been widely released) feel would sell well. Tablets work much better for color - they have a bigger range and they work quicker as well. An e-ink display rewrites itself every time it changes.

Since most books don't have color in them (that I read now - I have lots of picture books from when I was a teacher and my son was small), so it doesn't bother me. I read for the story.

The quality of color e-ink screens is not where Amazon would like it to be at this point. It is certainly NOT B.S.

There's this...

Ectaco JetBook Color eBook Reader

Of course it's worthless unless the text is in color. There's some market for these in Russia and China. It's been out for over three years and no company in the US has picked it up and developed content for it. That's probably a good indication that no one will. Plus, the color scale is limited, the refresh rate is slow, and it costs way more than most people will want to pay.

There is a newer version of that color ereader (newer being a relative term as it's still two years old).

Ectaco EDU.12-ES BK JetBook Color Deluxe - Black @ $458

Years ago I purchased one of the Ectaco JetBook-Lites and used that as my main ereader (it worked great with the ebooks from & Fictionwise) - but then later moved on to a kindle keyboard because there were more ebooks available here at Amazon.

That looks pretty cool, actually.
