so apparently i set a parental control on my kindle fire, but i don't remember what the password is. is there a way i can recover the password without having to reset my kindle to the factory settings?

 Ann says:
No. If you're not able to remember the password, you'll have to reset to factory defaults.

This same thing happened to me, however I never set up the parental controls. What can I do to recover a password I never set up?

Good news folks, see below transcript from Chat with Amazon...

You are now connected to Murthy from

Me:Received the latest KF update the other day and have been locked out of the browser ever since due to the Parental Control update. I submitted a ticket for this and have seen quite a few other people in the forums that are having the same problem. Any luck on fixing this issue?

How are you doing?

Me:see above :)

I'm sorry for the inconvenience
We've already reported this to our technical team, and they're working on taking care of it.
Mean while can you please try using your Amazon account password once on your Kindle Fire.

Me:I tried that and all the other passwords I could think of. No luck.
Any ETA on delivery of the bug fix?

Murthy:Errors like this are usually corrected shortly after they're reported. Have you tried resetting the Kindle to Factory Settings?

Me:I'm waiting before I do that. I have a lot of in-app data that I don't want to lose. REALLY do NOT want to do that.

Murthy:Okay. In this case please wait for 1-2 business days.
We will fix this issue soon.

Me:Is it a definite bug or is this issue still being researched?

Murthy:We found the errors already. We are fixing the issue.

Me:Ok good news. I will wait until a patch is sent. The patch will auto-download correct?

Murthy:I see that my colleague is following up with the issue. He will write to you once there is an update

Murthy:Thanks for your cooperation.
Is there anything else I can help you with today?

Me:All set, thank you. I have to say that the Amazon customer service is pretty much the best around. You guys are great. Thanks.

Some people are reporting that if they enter their wifi password then they can get into the Fire.

I am having the same problem. Do I have to contact and report it to customer support? I do not want to have to reset the K Fire!!

The OP's question was prior to the update. In the OP's case, the only resolution is to do a factory reset.

For people who have the issue following he update, look at this thread to keep track of what's going on with the issue.

That's all good and well, but my mama always told me to never trust dudes named "Murthy".

CS is working on fixing it through new update. If you do not want to lose your data you need to wait for the next update. I hope they also fix the one click to reset.

This is nice to know, but it won't help me. I have the same problem but discovered this when I brought my KF to a coffee shop and couldn't connect. When I tried to connect I was presented with a screen asking for a password. Now I have no active connection for Amazon to send a patch, so I'm screwed. Disagree with you about Amazon customer service being great. With a zillion of us in this situation and about to lose precious personal information (I'm a writer and created docs that can't be saved to the Cloud that I'll lose if I have to set to factory reset), I'm appalled that Amazon was so stupid to allow this to happen.

I don't think a "zillion" folks are affected but your point is well-taken. It's a black eye for Amazon; no doubt about it. On the other hand, let this be a lesson to you. NEVER rely upon a single source backup for important information. If you've invested enough effort to create a document, invest enough effort to save it in at least two places that cannot be compromised simultaneously.

In reply to an earlier post on May 6, 2012 2:52:23 PM PDT
You keep all of your writing on your Fire alone? Backup your files to a computer, reload after reset. And it is far from a "zillion" having this problem.

You created your docs on your Fire?

I restored mine and it fixted the problem and I still had all my apps and books. It wasn't as bad as I thought.
