I've started having problems with charging my Kindle Fire. I have to plug the charger in and out several times, then it will finally (hopefully) connects and starts charging. Also, when it does come on, there's a question mark (?) over the battery symbol in the upper right hand corner, where it would typically be showing that the battery is charging. When I go to my device, it shows that the battery is completly dead, but once I get the device on and pull the charging plug, there is battery life. Also, device wont turn on without the ac adapter plugged in. Any one else having this problem and/or have any suggestions? I just got the Fire in December. Thanks!

You may have a hardware problem, most likely a bad connection in your charging port. I wouldn't say they're "common," but there have been numerous reports, especially among those who say that they must "wiggle" the cable to get the KF to charge. (Don't do that, by the way, it's likely to make the problem worse.) If that's not the problem try the procedures described in the thread below to fully charge your battery and get the KF to recognize that it's charged.

If that doesn't work for you, contact Kindle Customer Support. They may ask you to jump through a few hoops but if you tell them that the charge port is unreliable, they'll send you a new KF.

Thank you. I just read a bunch of other posts from folks having the same problem. I'll check out the thread you included and also try the 20 second reset that lot's of people talked about. Thanks again!

Karen - I fought this for a few weeks as well and finally tonight called customer service. My new replacement Fire will be here Friday. Amazon Customer Service is superb! They never once try to make it "my fault" or make me jump through hoops. They treat you with respect and are very willing to work to get the problem solved, and when they couldn't - after just a few questions and trials and minutes - they replaced it. I will always be a fan of Amazon just for their customer service. They are heads above any other company! Good luck getting your problem solved - if you can't get it fixed with the tips above, call support!

jsh1120, I am so glad I found this thread and read your post. You helped me find the right words to express my issue with my Kindle Fire..charge port is unreliable. I am not a tech wizard, so I couldn't think of the right way to tell Customer support what was going on. I just called and reported my issue. Like S. Painter, my experience was great. They asked me a few questions and told me that I will receive my brand new replacement Kindle Fire in 2 days! They email me a return label I can print out and use to return the damaged Kindle and I am a happy customer. I love my KF and will know to be extra gentle with my ac power cord when I plug it into my charging port in the future. They must be very sensitive. Way to go, Amazon customer rock!

My children gave me a Kindle Fire last Christmas and now I have a problem in charging it. Before once I plug in the charger, there is a yellow light. When fully charged, the light turns green and I know that it is done. Yesterday, though the yellow light would not come on and thus I would not know if my Kindle is done charging. How should the problem be fixed? Have a Kindle cloud and it works fine - no problem with charging the battery. Can you tell me what is wrong with my Kindle or how the problems can be fixed? Email is

When I would plug my charger in the battery would turn green to show it was charging. When I plugged it in stays white with a zig zag in the battery icon.
What does that mean ?

I have a kindle fire that was given to me for Christmas 2011 and now I am having problems with charging it. I have read the other posts so I know I am not the only one having this problem. I have to turn off the Kindle and then play with the charger until the light comes on signifying it is charging. I talked to Amazon about this problem and asked them for solutions to the problem. They advised they could do nothing about the problem and when I asked if they stood behind their product by sending me a new one, they advised that since the KF is over a year old, it is out of warranty and would only offer me a discounted price on a new KF for $199. Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it and if so, what is your solution?

I have this problem at the moment, miss vikki.
My Kindle Fire does charge, but what is the zig zag in the battery icon. This has only happened recently. Does anyone know why?

the zigzag is supposed to be a lightning bolt -- it indicates that your device is connected to the power outlet; disappears when you disconnect.

Thank you, anonymer Feigling. I have only just picked up your response to my comment. I spoke to Kindle customer services earlier this morning and that it exactly what they said. So all is well and I am a happy little bunny again :-)

My kids both had the same issue within days of each other. Amazon replaced the Fire's. Now, the same issues are coming up again and they are refusing to replace them because they aren't within the warranty of the original tablets. I was also told that not very many people have had these charging issues and it's user error! Seriously, there are thousands of people complaining about this issue and it's not their problem? Funny, considering some of their reps told me it is a problem and they have fixed it in the second generation. Why aren't our other devices not charging if it's our fault. Come on Amazon, STAND BEHIND YOUR PRODUCT!!

How long had you had your first Kindle that they replaced. Mine was only 15 months old and they refused to replace it because it had gone out of warranty.

I have had some problems with mine charging at well. If my fire is on an active screen when I first plug it in, it will not show it is charging until I put it in sleep mode (by pressing the power button) and the power light turns res(orange). Starting up agin will show the green charging streak in the battery icon.

The Soution After several replacements.

1) Plugin as usual.
2) Screen Up.
3) Lift the end of the kindle with the power cord 3 or 4 inches so that kindle is at an angle.
4) Find some way to hold the wire and the kindle in this position.
This kludge has worked for several months for me.

My Kindle is 2 years old and when I called, the Philippines, the woman simply read a script saying that since my Kindle was not under any warrenty any longer, they would be happy to sell me a new one at the discount price of $149 ( or about $10 less than Best Buy). Think I will pass

Amazon replaced my first Kindle Fire when it wouldn't charge without any problem. Now my second Kindle Fire is doing the same thing - can't get it to charge. Apparently there is a defect in the charging port and since it's over a year old it's not covered by the warranty. I can get another Kindle Fire at a very small discount but if they haven't corrected the defect why bother. I have not heard of anyone with a Nook having this problem.
