I have really enjoyed checking out Kindle books from my local library and reading them on my Kindle Fire. Grisham's new book The Racketeer is only available in Adobe Epub format at my library not Kindle format. I have a Fire (1st Generation). Is there a way to read Adobe Epub books on the Fire? I have the Nook App already loaded if that is helpful. (I'm not sure what format Nook uses.) Thanks in advance for any help.

The Kindle won't read epub books. That's a very different format.

Normally you could use the freeware program Calibre to convert it to a Mobi format so you could read it, but this book will have DRM since it's from the library so it won't convert.

I'm afraid your choices are to get the book elsewhere or to get an epub reader. I bought the book from Amazon and I've just begun reading it. I usually like Grisham's books but the last two haven't been as good. I'm hoping this one will be better.

You could sideload Overdrive to the Fire, and use that.

Okay I will look into that. I thought Overdrive was just for listening to audio books. I did not realize it was a reader as well so I never looked at installing it. Thank you for the suggetion.

Overdrive is the app or program for using Library books. I can't be much more help, as I don't use it myself. You could search over on the Kindle Help Forum for other threads about it.

You could also side load one of the various epub readers. Again, a search on the other forum would probably get you the info you need.

I have liked all of Grisham's books with the exception of A Painted House. I have a brother who has a Master's Degree in English and he always says that Grisham's books are not very good literature. Well...I don't read them to have a literary experience I read them because they are fun. I have to admit that like you though, I have not thought his last couple were his best works.

I apologize for not looking closer. I saw "Kindle" but somehow I didn't see "Fire" and my answer wasn't correct for the Fire. I hope I didn't create too much confusion.

Just wanted to give a quick update on how this went for me. I actually found the Overdrive App in the Amazon App store and it was a simple matter to download it to the Fire, and connect it to my State's Library to download the Epub book. So I can now read Kindle, Nook and Epub books all on my Fire. Loving it more and more each day and it's almost a year old. Thank you to everyone, especially Meya for the responses. :-)

This is why I love these forums. I also downloaded the overdrive app and now I'm enjoying an epub book on my kindle fire. I did not realize that this could be done. Thanks for the information.

Grisham's books are great story telling, not great literature.

Academic-types tend to devalue story telling. I'm a school librarian and I highly value story telling. It gets students reading!

I downloaded overdrive and now I'm able to read epub. thank you for your assistance. I forgot to mention that I love to highlight and make notes as I read. any chance there's a program that allows me to do this on my kindle fire hd? epub and highlight/notes all in one program? the for any assistance.

T. Cook says:
Since Library books are temporary loans, and given the way highlighting/notes works currently, there's not much point in allowing the ability to highlight/make notes in library epub books because, as soon as the loan is done, the book disappears, and, therefore, so do the highlights/notes.

Thank you so much for your response. I am actually downloading some christian magazines and books from their website and they are not on loan. However this website only offers epubs and pdf. So Override works great but...I can't prepare myself for my congregation meetings by taking notes and highlighting

Rosario, if the material you are downloading doesn't have DRM protection, you can easily convert to Kindle format. Since you don't say which website or materials you are trying to download, I can't give you a definite answer but there are two ways to convert non-DRM documents.

1. Use the Kindle Personal Document Service and email them to your Kindle with "convert" in the subject line as explained here:

2. Convert them yourself by installing a program such as calibre on your computer. I use calibre and highly recommend it to all Kindle users. Here's the download link:

Rosario, I use the ezPDF app for Kindle Fire to underline, highlight, and post sticky notes to my meeting materials and for my bible reading.

You can't click through on the links to scriptures etc, right?

Lenora says:
No you won't have links to scriptures, but I believe there is a way to do that. If you go on the web site or it might be .org, there are some very intelligent friends who have found a way to link scriptures.

Ok I found one - download slideme app service, then download their app UB reader. It highlights, & the links work! I just wish I could afford an iPad, because this is all so automatic with Apple!

Overdrive will not allow kindle devices to use epub formats. That's bad information. You have to have epub loaded on the kindle device.
