For the past week or more, when I have deleted a book from my Paperwhite, the book cover fades, the books is gone, but the cover still exists and shows up on the kindle. it's kind of light shaded... You can't delete that, although the book is gone. And you cant do the hold and delete option with those. It will download again if you click it.

How do you get rid of the deleted books?

That is the result of the new cloud collection feature. You could make 2 collections, cloud and device, and seperate them, then sort by collections. The ones off device will still show grayed out on device if you open the cloud collection, but at least you won't have to sort through them when you open your on device collection. We are all hoping for a fix to this update with a new update.

Ah, I figured it was cloud related. Thanks for the reply.

A little searching leads me to this blog post that discusses the cloud collection in general. Kind of an annoying quirk, definitely needs an option for "on device" display instead of what's in the cloud.

Just Peachy says:
You can look at just what is on the Device - tap "device" instead of "cloud"

The books in the cloud still show up on the device. They are just a faded gray color.

That means they're in the Cloud, but not on your device. Change to "Device" view, and you'll see only the downloaded books.

On the paperwhite 2nd generation with the update if I open a collection it shows all the books in the collection, even those in the cloud. If I sort by authors then it only shows what is on device. I like to sort by collections as I choose my next book by what I'm in the mood for.

Yes, I am having the same frustration. To be clear, I am in the "on device" mode. When I open a collection (like my non-fiction folder), I see all the items that are in my cloud (the downloaded items in black print and the non-downloaded items in gray print). Very frustrating. Doesn't matter whether they are organized by recent, title, or author. The gray items are still there.

Any way around this? I called support. They said to reset my device to factory settings. I did, but the situation is exactly the same.

I'm not sure if I'll regret this later but I find if I delete them from my collection and delete from device they go away. I almost never reread books so I don't see the purpose of keeping them in a collection.

I am not seeing the option to remove books from my new kindle paper white. I get free books on BookBub and many of them I stop reading after a chapter or so although I've found some really good ones too. My point is that I am piling up books that I want to get rid of and I'm frustrated that I see no option to remove them from my device. I go to the menu across the top also I've looked in the popup menu. Can't find this option!!!

megan ~ Are you long pressing on the book title from the Home screen, and then selecting "Remove from Device" when the options pop up for the book?

If any one is still interested in getting "ghost titles" from showing up on your Kindle Paperwhite 2 ....I think I stumbled across an easier (and less permanent) way than deleting the books from your account.

Go to the parental controls in your settings and simply block Cloud connection.

I just did it with my new KPw2 and the ghost books disappeared like .... a ghost

I've found that removing ghost books from collections makes them go away. They're still in the cloud, but not clogging up the categories on my Kindle.

but then new books won't download unless you turn it back on

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 22, 2014 7:24:41 AM PDT
True. But after they download can't you just turn it back off? :-)

I suppose you could, but I just turn on and off wifi - the Cloud books don't bother me

This is true too... for some people.

But, since I read above that some people were being bothered by them as well, I figured what I suggested was a better alternative to some of them actually deleting the books from their accounts. Unless Amazon changed their rules ...Once you remove them from your account they're gone for good. You have to re-purchase them if you want them again. Depending on how financially well off one is, that can get to be some serious chunk of change! :-)

Oh well, a good friend once said that, "Opinions are like ***holes ...Everyone's got one" and I just showed mine

Take care everyone. I'm out! :-)

Thanks, have just done what you suggested, works a treat !!

It works and thank you very much. Hope the "powers that be" in Amazon find a more permanent solution.

I've been borrowing the books from my library, and it was getting crowded until I did what Tinkerbella suggested above: in cover view, hold down on the title and you'll get a menu. Delete Letter is the option that got rid of the unwanted titles. Don't know what that does to the ones you buy/want to reinstall. Haven't bought any books for my Paperwhite yet.
