I lost my kindle (kindle keyboard 3G Wifi) and de-registered it, thinking it was stolen but it wasn't, because I found it. If I turn on the wireless my understanding is that all the books will be erased, is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening?

Dittie says:
Glad it turned up. Deregistering only deletes content from Fire, not e-ink Kindle.

You should be able to just re-register the device to your account. As Dittiefurkey said, it is only the Fires where deregistering deletes content, not the e-ink Kindles, like the Kindle Keyboard.

Glad you found it!

If you reported it to Amazon as being lost or stolen, you'll have to contact them in order to re-register it. Otherwise, you shouldn't have any problem.
