My husband has been asking about my Kindle Fire Coins, can some one fill me in on what these are? I supposedly was to receive 500 recently?

You should have gotten an email on or about the 13th titled 'Welcome to Amazon Coins - You Have 500 Coins'

Near as I can tell, it's just a promo for the app store. When I look at apps now, the buying option is preselected to use the coins--they're worth a penny apiece. I don't see how this is different from the discount vouchers you get when making other purchases, although there was something about earning coins in the games. I could have that wrong, but there was something about in-app purchases and I suppose they might be used for buying pitchforks in Farmville?

So those emails only go out once a month? So if I just bought a Kindle the point wont show up until the next month?

Yes, you can use the coins for your original Kindle Fire. I bought 2 Hidden Object games with the 500 coins for my Fire (also 1st generation).

I bought one as a present for my son, and it put the coins on my account where they are useless, as opposed to on his where he could actually get something out of the app store. To make things worse, if I attach it to my account to get any of the apps he might want and then re-attach it to his he won't be able to use the apps since they are tied to the specific account that purchases them, but if I leave it attached to my account he can't make any of the purchases he would like (since I don't want him spending my money)

"...they are tied to the specific account that purchases them..."

Yep. Not much you can do about that, except buy gift cards for other people and have them delivered via email. The person accepts them, then applies them to their account.

Yes, I as well have an original Kindle Fire. It was explained to me that you would need to buy the APP online from a PC, not the original Kindle Fire. We do not have the options as of yet. They didn't take that into consideration.

Someone can please tell me if it is possible to earn coins.

No, there's no way to earn coins from Amazon. Amazon gives you 500 when you first buy a Fire.

You can buy Amazon Coins. I believe part of the idea is to enable in game purchases, particularly for children, without needing to use the credit card all of the time.

So if I wanted to download Minecraft and I had 500 coins and Minecraft is $7.00 would I be able to buy Minecraft?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 25, 2013 3:39:10 PM PST
no, you would need 700 coins = 1 coin = 1 penny

I don't think they are giving any free coins anymore. That was just a promotion to get the program started. You can buy them, however, if you still want them.

Connect to WiFi, go to Apps, hit the little menu icon on the upper left and Amazon Coins will be one of your options. To purchase, of course.
