Ok I did a dumb thing last night. Bought an audio children's book for my Kindle Paperwhite for granddaughter, and we cannot figure out how to up the volume. Do we have to buy ear buds or something? Help!

The PaperWhite has no speakers and no headphone jack. It has no audio capability at all.

You may have something else that can play that book, if it was from Audible they have apps for all sorts of devices, including desktop computers:

But why did it download and when I hit play, I hear a very faint voice reading?

If you hear a sound coming from your Kindle, you don't have a Paperwhite.

Does your Kindle have a color screen by any chance? If so, you've got a Kindle Fire. If it's a black and white screen and it's making a sound, it's not a Paperwhite. It's another e-ink model.

A refurbished Kindle Touch. A Fire. Another tablet. An iPod. Other players.

ETA: I understand that sometimes used Kindle keyboards are sold on eBay.

The SanDisk Sansa Clip+ 4 GB MP3 Player (Black) is a great player for audiobooks. I have a 32 GB sd card in mine and have tons of books on it. It's inexpensive, plays great, comes in various colors and sizes, and clips on youir collar, pocket, or whatever. I have 9 Kindles but only listen to audiobooks on my Sansa.
