Is there a way to retrieve your password without resetting eveything? If you do have to reset everything - do you have to pay and search for everything again or is it all saved in your cloud account?

I'm pretty confident that your only solution is a factory reset. But, whatever you purchased before is part of the account and remains available for you to download again.

I had to reset mine and all my photos were saved in the cloud. So they still will be there as long as they are in your cloud.

The people experiencing this bug did not enable the parental control password. This is a bug in the kindle. Don't reset your device people!!! Just go onto your amazon account and "manage your device" and deregister it. That resets the parental control password. Go to the device and hit resync. When thats done go into the settings gear, my account, and register it using your amazon account info. It will be as before, nothing lost. I just got off the chat with a helpful amazon tech rep who gave me this information. The only unfortunate part was that they blamed my kids for accidentally setting the password. The problem is that I have three kindles and they all exhibited this problem at the same moment. Not likely all three were "accidentally set"

Thank you psucale! This worked and prevented me from having to restore my son's Kindle Fire from scratch!

Psucale - can you please clarify?
Just go onto your amazon account and "manage your device" and deregister it. That resets the parental control password.

Go to the device and hit resync. (Is this on the amazon web page? or on the device? How can I do that before I re-register the device?)

When thats done go into the settings gear, my account, and register it using your amazon account info. It will be as before, nothing lost. ---I really need to be able to do this, I have 2 kids and both kindles are locked with a PW I can not get past! Kindle support is telling me to factory reset...but that will lose all progress in app and any in app purchases! I really don't want to lose all of that...

what if the wireless was turned off before one is locked out by this "parental control password" issue?

I just de-registered my device, but it had no effect since I was asked for this same password in order to turn on the wireless (the main password for this device does not work at all). The design for this is really quite poor, it missed many practice situations and put too much work on the users' side!

it makes no difference with the wifi on or off. when you deregister your device it loses all personal info. including the password for your wifi router. so as you register and set up the device again the password it is asking you for the wifi is the password for your wifi router (usually found on a sticker on the bottom if you do not have it saved elsewhere.

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately on the screen that asks for password, it clearly asks for this:

"Enter Your Parental Controls Password".

I de-registered the device yesterday, now more than 12 hours passed. And I rebooted the device. But it is still asking for "Parental Controls Password" in order to turn on the wireless!
