Because amazon didn't want it to be.

I haven't done this, but if one were to enable 3rd party applications and install the widgetlocker apk, I think there's a decent chance it would work.

It has something to do with the earths rotation and if the chicken is going to make to the other side or not.

i also noticed that, before upgrading to 6.1, i could click a picture in the browser and was presented the option to "set as wallpaper". i tried this, but it didn't change anything. when i updated the firmware to 6.2 and rebooted, the option was no longer available. i would hope that amazon has just taken it away for now and will make it available in the next update.

I really thought by now Amazon would let us change some pictures on our Kindles. They apparently still hate their customers and don't understand individuality :(

The lockscreen is just plain ugly. Obviously, someone thought they were being very clever, but I surely would appreciate the option of dumping it.

I am seriously surprised and kinda miffed that it isn't possible to change the lockscreen on my new Kindle Fire. What the hell Amazon? Some spaz designer decides that we should have to look at crayons and pebbles forever so now we can't change the image? I can just see that person now....pretentious thick black glasses....."clever" haircut....probably a bunch of retarded anime crap on his or her desk. We all know the type..

Seriously though Amazon...let us change the damn images or I'll.....uhh....I dunno draw pictures of Jeff Bezos with boobs or something.

@lol @ design: Have you sent feedback to Amazon? You can use the Fire's built in feedback option to tell Amazon. Go to the top where the settings are, click on More and the first item in the list is Help & Feedback. Then the feedback form is the 3rd tab.

What, am I the only one who likes the built in lock screen pictures? Some are better than others but most are fairly stunning.

Mary - I like them, too! Can you imagine the screaming if people were confronted with Skeletor?

Why doesn't Amazon let you change the wallpaper? Not sure but a clue might be in how they deliver special offers on the Kindle readers. They replace the screen saver wallpaper with the offers. Likely they want to keep their (rather than your) options open.

The Fire doesn't have special offers.

What is frustrating is that if you go to Settings, choose Applications and then All Applications you will see Live Wallpaper Picker. But none the Live Wallpapers in the app store are compatible with the Fire.

People can get themselves torqued up over the darnedest things. The lock screen shows for as much as 5 seconds, barely enough time to get focused on the subject. If I don't slide the unlock arrow in that time, the screen goes black again. I haven't had time to study them all, but I like the one with incandescent bulbs/vacuum tubes.

Carbonbased says:
Proving my point about how little time you get to study the images, lol@design complains about crayons and pebbles forever...I've looked through the whole rotation (21) twice and there are no pics of crayons or pebbles.
There's three shots of pencils--erasers, unsharpened lead and sharpened colored art;
Three shots of block letters--one highlights the letter A, another shows the blocks for Kindle and the third shows Reader;
Three shots of film--one movie film with reel, two that look like 35mm or filmstrips;
Three shots of typewriter parts--the strikers and later the coin shaped keys of an old manual and the letter ball from a selectric;
Two shots of vacuum tubes--small and large;
Vinyl records
Cassette tapes
Fountain pen nibs
Box cameras
Guitar strings on inlaid fretboard
Rolled tablets
Cave art

Thanks for the list. Maybe they confused colored pencils for crayons.

I don't think it is much of an issue where the images are the issue but the lack of control over a device that is built on an OS that is usually very customizable. It is just odd that you would forver have to use the same images. My issue with this is that if one chooses to to use a different launcher the wallpaper cannot be changed, and if it is once you lock it and go back in the KF wallpapers take over and change every time. I was able to use Metamorph and use a zip file I got from and i was able to change my wallpapers to new ones because I felt the stock wallpapers where far too distracting for my icons using Go Launcher. The images still reset very time you leave and come back but I like them much better.

Actually, it's very useful to have custom lock screens when your household has 2+ kindles. Easy to differentiate them. I'm actually shocked fire lacks such basic customization feature.

if you dont like the Carousel and want to customize your own wallpapers, try sideloading the app Go Launcher EX

Noah Kaplan says:
Go Launcher doesnt help. You can set a wallpaper, but then the KF automatically changes it back to one of the default ones once the screen goes off. Using Go Launcher actually makes the problem worse because you see the wallpapers more and they are very distracting and make icons difficult to use (that might be part of the point). Its frustrating and only serves Amazon's, rather than the users', interest.
