I found a guy on craigslist selling an unopened 32 gb kindle fire hd because he already has an iPad and got it as a gift. However, will it still have the 1 year warranty on it and would I be able to buy the extended warranty for it?

Gayle - Please don't do it. I was just helping another customer who bought a Kindle Fire off of craigslist and it turned out the device was rooted, the warranty was voided and it was not working properly. Unless you are a very techie person and feel comfortable fixing this type of device yourself, buy it from Amazon or another reputable retailer. Additionally, always use a credit card for purchases so that you have recourse and are protected.

 Ann says:
The one year warranty is from the date of original purchase, so you'll get whatever time is remaining. Normally, you can order the extended warranty within 30 days of the original purchase. I'm not sure how it works with used Kindles, though.

It would be a good idea get the serial number from the seller, so that you can check with Amazon support and make sure the Kindle can be registered and used. They can also let you know how much of the warranty is left, and can advise you about the extended warranty. Click the "Help" link at the top of this page, then press the "Contact Us" button to reach support.

As the others have said, I'd be very wary buying something like this off craigslist. Too many things can go wrong.

Where can you find the serial off the box?

Just ask the seller. He'll know. It's normally on the device (in the settings) itself, not on the box. If he is unwilling, I'd be suspicious that the Kindle as stolen or un-register-able.

And Gayle, really, I strongly advise that you do not buy electronics off or craig's list.

There's a white label on the end of the box with a bar code, serial number, and the name of the model (Kindle Fire HD 7" ...). The serial number is 10 digits and starts with B00.

It's unopened. The guy doesn't want it because he has an iPad.

Thank you! I asked him now.

Yes, and people lie all the time. Please just be very careful.

I may hold off if he doesn't answer. I am really interested in the HD model though. Do you think that is a good choice?

Yes, I love my Kindle Fire HD, but I wouldn't buy one anywhere but Amazon (and I'm not an Amazon employee, just a customer).

When I bought my Kindle Keyboard from craig's list I registered it before I paid for it. That way I could make sure that it worked and that it was not a scam.
