I've got a Kindle DX and am trying to update the firmware from 2.5.6 to the latest 2.5.8. I downloaded the update which is a .bin file. I copied that to the root directory but nothing happens. Amazon says to navigate to Home, Menu, Settings and look for an update button there but there is no update button there. I haven't registered this thing. I wonder if that's stopping the update process?

Until you register your Kindle DX many of its features aren't activated.

You need to register it and connect to the Amazon server to activate all the options and features.

OK thanks. So if you're not near a wireless network you can't update it? No way of doing this plugged into the computer?

The DX doesn't use WiFi, it only has 3G. So, as long as you are near cell service, you should be able to register.

You can't do it any other way.

The proper sequence to access the Update Your Kindle is, "Menu/Settings/Menu again/Update Your Kindle."

When you go into settings hit the menu key again. There should be an update link in the drop down menu.

The downvote faeries are out in droves today. Their little wings must get tired.

I restarted it and now its showing as 2.5.8. There are 2 models of DX: Wifi and 3G. I have the Wifi one.

The wifi DX doesn't exist. Never did. The K3 was the first version to have wifi and the DX never progressed beyond version 2. There was the DXUS, DX international and the DX with the new screen hardware (last model).

No there isn't. I think you just post to get attention. That is why you show up on my ignore list.

From this page:
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/help/customer/display.html?ie=UTF8&nodeId=200941860

It says:
For Kindle DX (US Wireless), your serial number will start with "B004"

That's where I got my update. There is a DX Wireless and DX 3g. This is for North America.

There were two "models" in that one uses Sprint, the US version, and one uses AT&T, the global version.

The DX never had WiFi capability.

Jazzy_Jeff says:
That is correct Wireless as in 3G. Not wifi.

Do you people see that there is both a wireless version and a 3g version on this page? I'm assuming you're in the US? Unless there is a difference between wifi and wireless. I realize 3g means it works on a cell network and its definitely not that. Is there a difference between a wifi model and a wireless model?

Those are both 3G. As Meya pointed out, the US Wireless version uses Sprint and the 3G (International version) uses AT&T.

3g is wireless off of cell towers. Wifi means you run off of internet services. I have 3 Dx's, none have wifi.

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 10, 2013 11:34:30 AM PDT
Wireless means there are no wires. So wi-fi and 3G are both wireless.

Really? That seems odd. I wonder why they wouldn't call one Sprint and the other AT&T if they're both 3g. It also seems odd they'd name one 3g and not the other when they both are.
