I'm coming from the Kindle Keyboard, and I was disappointed to find that the new Paperwhite's screen is actually darker than the Keyboard's. I'm talking about having the light turned all the way off and just looking at the screen. The Kindle Keyboard's screen is noticeably whiter than the Paperwhite. Is everyone else seeing this too?

I'm not sure about the Keyboard, but my Paperwhite's screen is darker with the light all the way off than my Kindle Touch. It is kind of ironic considering the name. I always have the light on a little bit at least, and with the light on it's dramatically whiter with better contrast than my Kindle Touch.

Mine is definitely darker, but since the whole point of having it is the built-in light, I honestly don't care.

Since my KK stays on my nightstand where I always have a reading light, and my PW goes around in my bag with me, they're never side-by-side. So, no. I haven't compared them.

The only time I do not use the light on my Paperwhite is if I happen to be outside. For all other reading inside, the light is always on. Almost always at full brightness. That is why I love the Paperwhite, the light makes the screen wonderful.

I don't even consider reading without the light now. Most of the areas in my home are under lit for reading. As much as I liked the non-lit e-ink models, the Paperwhite is the only one I read on now.

Use the light, it is the reason they designed the Paperwhite.

It should be darker when the light is off. There is an extra layer (the "light guide") that is not on the non-lit models. It was designed to always have the light on, even just a little.

I would disagree that it "should be" darker, though I can see how that layer could make it darker. I usually have the light on just a little (4-8) to brighten up the background, but I don't like to have it on so that it's noticeable unless I need it. Maybe I'm the only crazy one. I work on computers all day and don't like having to look at another constantly lighted screen (even if it is a front light). I've gotten so used to the clean, book-like look of the Kindle Keyboard, that I don't like going to a screen that is obviously lit all the time.

All in all, I love the device. I don't agree with the light being the whole purpose of the Paperwhite, but I would agree that it is the stand out feature. Oh well, I'm sure I'll get used to the screen. I've already read quite a bit on it and I'm not complaining too much (especially about reading in dim rooms). I just wanted to make sure mine wasn't the exception.

Sounds like you just need to find that "sweet spot" of where it's light enough to read but not too bright to bother you.
