how do i know if i can loan a book?

how can i tell if a book i have on my kindle can be loaned?

The key here is that you have to do the checking here online. That I can see [fiddling with Kindle], you can't see this information on the Kindle itself.

I don't think you can lend a book using a Kindle, either (except maybe when using the browser through a Fire).

No, I don't think so, either. The loan has to be originated via browser, and completed at the other end via browser as well.
