It depends on what the 10-year-old needs to do with the device. If a lot of word processing, then defintely the laptop. If only playing games and watching movies, probably the tablet.

lots of heavy duty research = laptop

Just a warning, the new Fires do not have Flash as Adobe has stopped supporting Android devices, lot of the youtube videos still use flash so you will run into problems there.

There is a way around this by downloading a browser that supports flasha and sideloading the flash.apk file. There are instructions on other posts on how to go about this.

Amazon's leather case has been, in my experience with it for my Kindle Keyboard, very good at protecting the Kindle when put into bags. I recall a thread recommending a different brand of hard case as better than the leather cover for the Fire HD in particular (and cheaper too, but I can't remember where it was). Basically, you want a hard shell case, not a soft case/"sleeve".

You also may want to invest in a plastic screen protector. The screen's pretty hard to scratch, but the protector is replaceable if that gets gunked up or scratched.

My (adult) brother is still destructo boy... the laptop he uses in the kitchen is so food-encrusted that I won't touch the thing... I'd never lend him my HD! ;-)

My 9-year-old LOVES to use my Fire. He watches videos, plays games, etc. I still had to replace my dead laptop, though, because for school and stuff, we still need to be able to print a lot of the time.

If the 10-year-old will still have ready access to a PC/lappy when required, then a Fire would be a really cool gift! Like, totally awesome.
