I got a Kindle Reader for my wife last Christmas. It has honestly never been opened. She said she likes old fashioned paper better. I am looking to resell it and use money towards an HD, but I don't have the receipt..and I don't want to open the box.

Serial number starts out FSN 90231701

I did a Google Search. I saw that FSN90231703 was the 2GB version. I am guessing the 1701 was the 1GB or lower edition? Any assistance is appreciated.

Do you remember how much you paid? Did you buy the one with a lighted screen? What does the box say?

It should be in your purchase history. Go to Your Account > Your Orders and search it.

ETA: This is only true, of course, if you bought it from Amazon.

There is no 1GB or lower edition. If you paid $69 (or less, on sale) it's the basic Kindle. Having the lower serial number, that's probably what it is.

You have to realize that if you bought it and can't identify it from that number, neither can a potential buyer, in which case, you might as well open the box. Also, if you bought it from Amazon and didn't mark it as a gift, it's registered to your account. You want to be sure to deregister it before handing it over to someone else.

You need to open the box before trying to sell it, because you need to check to see if it can even be charged. Letting the Kindle sit around unused for a year is worse than using it every day.

Thank you for the replies. I actually purchased it from Best Buy-it was really a last minute gift so I never registered it. I believe the price was around $70 so I am assuming it is the original Kindle.

Honestly? I'd be *very* cautious about buying an unopened kindle from someone who doesn't have the receipt. In fact, I probably wouldn't do it; the chances of it being stolen are far too high.

And supposing you can find the receipt, I agree with Artist - you need to open the box and check it charges and works properly. Electronics with Li-Ion batteries in them are one item where sitting unopened in the box for >1 year doesn't count as a virtue.

If you tell us how much you paid for it and where you bought it, that would help us to figure out which kindle it is.

The $69 Kindle is not the original Kindle. It is the Basic Kindle, sometimes called the Baby Kindle.

It's not the Original Kindle -- that came out in 2007.
It sounds like the basic Kindle Kindle, 6" E Ink Display, Wi-Fi - Includes Special Offers (Black)

That's the Kindle Basic (or Kindle 4). The _original_ kindle (Kindle 1) was around $500 when it was released 6 years ago :-)

I thought the Baby Kindle was pre-Basic Kindle?

R. D. Clark says:
Those are both customer nicknames for the same product. To Amazon, of course, it's just "the Kindle." (It's the only model that's just a Kindle. As such, it's the true successor to the original, the K2, and the K3/KK, all of which were just "Kindle" when introduced.)

It just seemed to me that the Baby Kindle had a graphite case and was the generation before this Basic. Maybe I'm dreaming.
