We finally recieved the cable to connect the kindle fire to our windows 7 laptop. We connected the cable and windows attempted to find the drivers and it could not locate the software.
I came to the Amazon site and tired of the not helpful help loop. This was the last resort. Anyone have any ideas where we get the drivers? I thought it was very spartan of Amazon to not include any method to connect this device to a computer, but I see the device is not ready for prime time.
Anyone have any answers... I don't even have a phone number for these folks.

It should be seen as a removable drive replete with folders.

To connect the Kindle Fire you have to unlock it first. It will then connect to the PC.

A quick summary!

1. Plug in cable to the computer but don't connect to Fire just yet
2. Unlock the Fire
3. Connect the cable to the fire - you should be connected at this point

NOTE: If you see a message from Windows 7 you may have to choose what to do, like canceling the message or clicking through to change your Windows 7 settings (you can cancel but I'd go ahead and let Windows 7 default to getting drivers automatically)

Dianne, just close out those error messages. The Kindle should show up in My Computer as a removable drive, with another drive letter.

You connection issue could be your router, if you are connecting from home. More details would be needed to give advice.

I have the same issue. I can see the folders as a removable drive, but if I transfer MP4s to the video folder or aa files from to the audible folder, the kindle can't see or play them. Also the Audible Manager software says there is no kindle connected even when I can see it in My Computer.

As an ignorant first time user of Kindle , and this case Kindle Fire , I down loaded a book from Amazon on to my office computer but when I tried to open on Kindle Fire at home , could not seem to find this anywhere . Any simple solutions for not very tech minded 70 year old ?

@Martin Ross Just go to the Manage Your Kindle page on Amazon and locate the book and send it to the device.

Had the same problem, none of the suggestions below worked. Follow the link below for the instructions that worked for me.

I'm still having the same problem, im using windows 7 and when i plug my kindle fire in, there is nothing under 'my computer' to access it. In the device manager it shows up as 'android phone'. When i look at devices and printers, it shows up as 'kindle' but i cant open it or do anything with it. On the kindle itself it says it is plugged in via usb, but doesn't charge while plugged into the computer (I'm not sure if it should or not)

Wes, try the instructions from this link. It worked for me, I had the exact same issue:

I tried that, but it didn't work. I did get it to work though, I went into devices and printers and right clicked on the kindle, updated the driver and suddenly it worked.

Wow, and I tried updating the driver and THAT didn't work. Kind of like a shell game isn't it?

Two days ago I also got the "no driver" message, clicked through, and did a drag&drop to copy my Outlook-then-Gmail -exported - .vcf file from the PC to the Kindle Fire. Everything worked OK, but yesterday I received my 1st ever Windows 7 blue screen - after the PC had been running perfectly for over a year. BSOD related to the Kindle use/install? I don't know.
added 4/21: btw - the BSOD referred to any hardware changes I had made recently. But I have made no hardware changes for weeks - except for connecting the Kindle Fire.

I have recently got the kindle fire for my birthday. I have windows 7 and cannot connect my fire through my computer. The fire is not showing in my computer at all. Any advice? I am a photographer and would to be able to put my photos on there to use as my portfolio. please help!

Charlie Fox says:
First make sure the fire is 'awake' on the main page with the shelves. then connect the USB to the pc. Ignore the message that possibly comes up indicating you need a driver, you don't, close that message and the Fire should be listed under My computer.

Does anyone actually have the device driver file for this?

In reply to an earlier post on Aug 31, 2012 4:35:34 AM PDT
@p. kop: There is no driver file needed. Click through the message. Also read the post above yours, please.

This is the solution that works, but nowhere does Kindle tell you that!!!! There apparently is no driver, but Windows 7 keeps want to get one.
