Hello I have a Kindle which was working great until a couple of days ago. Now although fully charged I can't turn it on. Any suggestions

Patricia, try a reboot. Unplug it from any power source, press and hold the power button for a full 30 seconds. Set it down, and leave it alone for 5 minutes.

See if it operates correctly afterward.

Thank you for this recommendation! Mine would not turn on either and I did not know about rebooting it. Now it seems to be just fine! Thank you!

I had the same problem. It's a bit disconcerting as I've only owned it for a couple days. Thanks for the suggestion. It worked.

Didn't work for me. I get absolutely nothing. No lights either. I think it's dead.

I've had mine for 6 months and haven't read lately. I have used two different cables as the light was orange then turned green but wouldn't turn on. I managed to turn it on via my laptop by simply plugging it to the pc. The battery is fully charged. Altho the book then appeared it then wouldn't switch off and eventually switched off itself. But I still cannot switch on. I have just done the 30 secs rule and it seems to have switched on (tree and bar has appeared). Worked! Whoop! Thought was going to have to call Dad ad tell him the gift was faulty ... glad I haven't got to upset. Thanks for leaving the tip!

This solution of holding the button to reboot has not worked for me. Is there any suggestion? I can turn the kindle on if I plug it into my laptop, but then I can't turn it off. If the kindle is idle for several minutes it turns off automatically but then I can't turn it back on again (even after rebooting and waiting 5 minutes). Any other suggestions?

Veronica, see the help link at the top of the page? Click on that and then the orange contact us button, and talk with Kindle customer support. Don't use email.

Thank-you Meya! Mine was only a week old when it froze, I was stressing as I needed it the next morning. You are a sanity saver xx

My kindle won't seen to charge to the green light. Everytime I push or hold the button in it will be green then it shuts off soon as I let the button go. The screen is on and it's showing me my lock screen to type in my password but it seems frozen???

Yay, it worked, thank you so much!

Meya's suggestion worked on my daughter's kindle paperwhite which is not even a month old. We had an older kindle (gen 4) for a few years with no such problems.

I've got a paperwhite too and its screen is froken. When i plug it on any power source it just show the orange light and doesn't turn on.
I tried to reboot many times, and it just stays the same way. If i unplug it from any power source it just stay dead. What am i supposed to do?

Yvens: If that hard reboot does not help, Use the Help link at the top of the page to contact Amazon Kindle CS and talk with them about it - use the live chat or the call back feature if you can, not email. Or go to and contact CS. I advise using Live Chat or the Call Me Back feature and not email, as they will have your account details available to them immediately when you talk with them.

I managed to turn it by pressing the power button for exaclty 1 minute and then pressing it again. It magically started to reboot and it's working fine now. Thank you.
I read about this method here:

I just got my fire 8.9 back from the dead with the 30 second method but the experience has got me thinking about loosing my data. Can I store my calendar data in the cloud?

SOOOOOOOOO grateful for internet! Mine wouldn't turn on and I was really thinking I would have to buy a new one, which I cannot afford to do! Did the reboot and it's working! THANK YOU!!

I am in Spain now. My U.S. kindle worked fine for more than a year. But all of a sudden the screen got really bad, only a few letters could be seen on the screen. I tried the 30-sec rule and it did not help at all. What else can I do? Thanks!

Which Kindle do you have? If it's e-ink, that sounds like a broken screen.

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 25, 2014 12:39:57 AM PST
Worked for me, thanks so much Meya

What is e-ink? It is about 3-4 years old. It turns on and off easily but would not show much. Stripes, letters, half-words, white spots. I guess I would just have to throw it away. Perhaps you are right, it has the broken screen.
