Can you buy ebooks using a redeemed gift card?

It happens like this: whenever I try to buy an ebook, the server won't accept my gift card code. I'm sure it's correct- I checked it multiple times. It keeps saying that it's wrong, however.

I only want to pay through my gift card balance. And the only other options are credit card or amazon store card.

Is there a way I can purchase ebooks using my gift card? Thanks so much!

Lydia, you need to apply the gift card to your account. Click on Your Account up at the top right of the page, then look in the Payments area. You'll see Apply a Gift Card to Account. Click that, and type in the code.

All 1-click purchases, which Kindle books are, will pull from that balance. If you buy something using the Cart, you'll be able to exclude that balance when you go through the Check Out process.

Thank you, but I have applied the code to my account already. The balance is just sitting there! I realized that the option to use gift card + promotional blah blah things only shows up when I buy non-digital items. :/ I hope amazon can get back to me soon! I'm not sure whether it's just me being really stupid or something. Oh well. Thanks anyway!

If you have applied the code to your account then you are set. When you purchase a ebook it will use the gift card balance first, once the balance runs out then it will charge your credit card.

I sure hope it works out to be as simple as you say it. Thanks! I'll go try again!

Lydia, don't try to enter the code again. Once you enter the code it stays there, and Amazon will use the gift card balance for all purchases until it runs out.

Just chose a book, and click the Buy button. The amount will immediately be deducted from the card balance.

Thanks for all the input guys! It turns out there was too little in my account as I didn't think about tax. I accidentally charged 17 cents to my mum's credit card instead. Ooops :x But anyway, i got the book! :) Haha, is it bad to be happy? :o

Thanks again! :)

I have a gift card balance of $7.78 and want to buy a $1.99 e-book. When I go to buy all I get is that my credit cards are
out of date (which they aren't...help!

You need to be sure the card assigned to your 1-click payment settings is also up to date. Click on Your Account at the top of the page, scroll down to Settings, and click on the 1-Click Settings link.

Thank you. It wasn't and that seems to have fixed the problem...

Did you even bother to read the responses in this thread? I mean, the VERY FIRST response answers your question.

I have plenty of money in my gift card balance but whenever i purchase an e-book amazon charges my credit card and leaves my gift card balance untouched. How do I change this?!?!?!

flipoid says:
Is the amount of the purchase actually showing on your credit card statement? If you look at the Order Summary too soon, it will show as if it is taking from the credt card. But if you look at the email confirmation, it should show "gift card" in the itemization of your purchase.

If the email receipt doesn't reflect the gift card deduction, then it could be a couple of things:

(1) You are not in the US and are trying to use another country's gift card funds on the .com site (for example, an amazon.ca gift card), or vice-versa.

(2) Something on your account is messed up and you should contact Amazon (Help link at either top or bottom of every Amazon page, then "Need More Help?" and "Contact Us") to see if it is something Amazon needs to straighten out.

A. Dietz says:
Is it an Amazon gift card? If so you can apply it to your account. If it's a MasterCard, Visa, or Amex gift card, you can use it like a regular credit card. If it's some other kind of gift card, no.

This matter was settled quite a while ago, but thanks for your input. Please close this inquiry. Happy 4th :-)
