We have a new, free software update available for Kindle Paperwhite 2nd Generation that can be found here:
http://www.amazon.com/kindlesoftwareupdates/paperwhite2ndgen

This update automatically downloads and installs on your Kindle Paperwhite; however, you can also manually download the software and transfer the update to your device via USB cable.

The software update includes general improvements and the following feature enhancements:

* Sync to the Most Recent Page Read
Any books you're reading on your Kindle Paperwhite will now sync to the most recent page read across all Kindle devices and/or reading apps registered to your Amazon account. You can still manually sync your Kindle Paperwhite to go to the furthest page read.

* Preview a PDF in Pan-and-Zoom Mode
When viewing a PDF in pan-and-zoom mode, you will now see a small preview window in the margin of the screen.

* Read a Sample While Your Physical Book Ships
While you are waiting for select physical books to arrive at your doorstep, you can start reading the book right away by adding a sample of the book to your Kindle library. With this release, these samples will be now available for download in the Cloud tab of your Kindle Paperwhite in addition to your other supported Kindle devices and apps. Any previous samples you have claimed through a physical book purchase will also be available in the Cloud to download.

How much space is needed on the Kindle in order to download the update?

I'm not sure, but update_kindle_5.4.5.bin is about 180 mb, so I'd think you'd need that amount, plus some extra for the update process itself.

I've installed this update on my two Paperwhite 2nd gen devices and the way the sync works surprised me. The first surprise was that I read a bit on one and then turned on the other and it immediately offered to go to the latest page. No syncing at all. I let it go and it worked perfectly.

The second surprise is how often that fails to work. :)

A few times I even advanced pages on one and went back to the other and turned it on and then went back to the first and it wanted to go back to the position of the other. Exactly the opposite of what it's supposed to do.

So this new part of the sync feature is still buggy but I'm sure they'll fix that in a future update. I'm just glad to see them improving the sync this way. I can't think of any better improvement they might have made.

I wonder if sync just might be one of the most important features for Amazon. I'm able to get books from a lot of sources, sometimes for less money and occasionally even free. I can easily convert books to work well on the Kindle. I do most of my reading on my Paperwhite but more than a little on my phone and the ability to sync is very important to me and is the reason I buy my books from Amazon even when they're free or cheaper elsewhere.

I'll sometimes get a freebie somewhere and convert it and put it on the Kindle as a sort of extended length sample but as soon as I decide I want to read it I'll buy the Kindle version to get the sync ability, especially if it also has X-Ray. If it doesn't have X-Ray sometimes I'll send the freebie through send to Kindle to be able to sync it but more and more books have X-Ray now and that makes a big difference to me.

My Paperwhite 2 is still on the old version and "Update Your Kindle" in the settings menu is still grayed out and cannot be used.

When will this become available to automatically download?

Artist says:
You have to follow the download procedures on the update page that Megan posted above.

Amazon rolls out updates over a few weeks' time. There's no date that can be given as to when it will download to your device.

I went to the Amazon page and downloaded it manually and installed it. It's a pretty simple process.

Russian keyboard available on current model of Kindle Fires (have to download, but there are over 35 different keyboard languages now offered)

as for the interface language, that usually only comes when Amazon is able to set up a kindle store in the country in questions and the new sanctions against Russian by the US government have pushed back any potential date for that to occur

CBRetriever says:
the update button only becomes active when you have manually downloaded and copied the update file to the kindle - also, updates are only via wifi, not 3G, and the file is a good size, so it might take a while

paperwhite 2nd gen3g can I listen to audio books
To get free trial of kindle unlimited, do I need to provide credit card

No audio/speakers on PaperWhite. I've kept my Kindle Touch and bought a second Touch (refurbished) primarily because I use the text-to-speech extensively. Hoping Amazon eventually puts audio on the PW.

Does this really work for any of you? I've had my Paperwhite 2 for months, there have been at least two and possibly more updates, and none of them has ever updated automatically. In concert with the product descriptions stating that you don't need a computer to use your Kindle, it doesn't seem an accurate feature description, from my own experience...

 Ann says:
Yes, I've received automatic updates. They can take a while, though, as the updates are rolled out in batches over the course of several weeks. Are you leaving your wifi on and connected, and your device in sleep mode when not in use?

B. Marks says:
I've been using Kindles for several years and I've only gotten an automatic update once on a Kindle Fire HD. It began when I was just ready to watch a video so I had to wait.

I've never gotten an automatic update on my Paperwhite or my earlier Kindles and I'm glad. I'd hate to sit down to read a book and find out it wants to update instead. I want to be in control of that.

It's true that you don't need a computer to use the Kindle. Updating isn't using. It's trying to be patient till you can use it again.

I have never gotten an automatic update on my Paperwhites either and I do have wi-fi on a good part of the time. It is just easier to update via my computer so I am now used to doing that. Oddly, the Kindle Fire gets updates almost right after they are announced.

plug not, I've left the wireless on all our eink Kindles for months at a time, and they never update. Our family has a Basic Kindle, 2 Kindle keyboards, a Kindle Touch, three PW1's and a PW2 on our account and only once have any of them updated automatically. One of the PW1's updated by itself. Once. The Fire HDX seems to update as soon as they announce an update, but none of the eink Kindles have for me. I have no idea why, but they just never seem to roll out automatically for us. I'm glad to hear I'm not alone.

David, I hope you will publish the results of your findings. I am not seeing syncing any different from what it was. I go back and forth between a Paperwhite 1 and a Paperwhite 2 and when I finish in one of them go to Home and then sync and check for items. Even so, when I open the book on the other, I have to wait almost a minute before it asks me if I want to go to the latest place read.

Downloaded the update and then got a message that Kindle does not recognize the .bin. It never updated.
