Can you convert Nook books to Kindle books?

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 31, 2013 5:46:43 AM PDT
No, they are completely different. But if you get a Fire, you can put the Nook app on it.

What is the format of the books on a nook? Kindle can read the proprietary amazon format as well as pdf and mobi. What device to do you want to read the kindle books on?

Nook books are epub. Like Amazon, B&N has a proprietary DRM system.

WoodSanta says:
You could use calibre to convert Epub to Mobi or PDF and then import to any Kindle device. Kind of a back door approach but it works.

Not if the books have DRM.

Do they have DRM?

Most Nook books do have DRM as do most Kindle.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 1, 2013 8:46:11 AM PDT
Actually, a growing number of books do not have DRM. I read a lot of science fiction and fantasy, so maybe I notice it more. None of Tor's books have DRM. And a lot of the indie books do not have DRM. Those books can be converted to whatever format you want quite easily.

Not quite true. There are apps that can read Nook books (Aldiko being one.)

Baen is one of my favorite ebook sites. At this point I stand by the 'most' comment but you are correct that things may be changing :0)

Yes, you can download a free app that converts the nook format to kindle and vice-versus. I have done it. I don't remember the name of the app, but you can google "conver nook to kindle" and get the website.

Converting a DRMed Nook book to Kindle format is technically illegal.

Posted on Nov 1, 2013 9:21:58 AM PDT
I also buy a lot of books from Baen and Tor/Forge and all are DRM-free, as are many backlist titles even from major publishing houses. Unfortunately, there no reliable way of knowing whether Kindle books have DRM unless the product page says so or says "Simultaneous Device Usage: Unlimited". B&N is even worse at providing DRM info on the product page.

In any event, if the books are DRM-free, you can easily convert formats with Calibre: http://calibre-ebook.com/download . Also, the toolbar in Calibre has a "Get Books" button which is a great help in finding DRM-free books. It doesn't link to torrent sites or other illegal file sharing sites, only to sites that sell or allow free, legal downloads.

An easy way to find out if a book has DRM is to try and convert it in Calibre. If it is DRM'd, Calibre will give you a error message stating that.

All this proprietary crap is just that - crap. I BOUGHT the book. Who cares what venue I read it on? *so aggravated*

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 1, 2014 5:14:14 AM PST
Sorry, I suggest you read the terms of purchase for eBooks. You did NOT buy the book. You bought a non-transferable license to READ the book. The author/publisher hold ALL rights to the book. It's not "crap". It's the law, world wide.

Sorry, my last post was not accurate. I have it on my 1st gen Fire, but have not downloaded it to my HDX.

Where are you downloading it from?

~nospin says:
You need to get the app from another source such as 1mobile and set your Fire to Allow Installation of Unknown apps.

I have both the Nook app and the Aldiko app on my Kindle Fire HDX, and both work just fine. I got them from goodereader.com.
