I received a Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 for Christmas. I have a cover/stand for it but am interested in also buying a zipper case/sleeve for it so that I can out put it inside my purse or tote bag. Does anyone have any recommendations.

Jennifer - I'd go to someplace like Office Depot and get a neoprene case for a small netbook or tablet. They have lots of them in those places.

The vast majority of sleeves that are marketed for Kindle HD and HDX 8.9 are really just iPad sleeves. The Kindles will fit in these, but they'll have an inch or so of extra space at the narrow side. The fit is pretty close along the long side, though, as the Kindles and iPads are about the same height in portrait. So these cases will do. I picked up a GratShield VIES case for my HDX 8.9, and found it to be just another re-purposed iPad sleeve. The quality is decent, though, and for $15 I suppose it'll do. It has plenty of good padding. I am planning to pad out the inside with some extra foam rubber to improve the fit.

B. Gonzalez says: has several that also fit the HDX 8.9 on sale.

Can anyone recommend a case for the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9? I keep reading the reviews and there seem to be problems and complaints, especially using the rear facing camera. I also need a suggestion for a screen protector. I bought a two-pack which was a disaster and is too big and didn't stick.

I use the Origami case for my 8.9 HDX. I really like does well protecting my device in my purse and it acts as a stand whether I'm reading of watching videos or playing games. I don't feel the need for a sleeve or other protection for the device. Just my $.02 worth...

Thanks I think I am leaning towards that one.

I am very fond of the Fintie... it is inexpensive -- price under $20, depending on model and color -- and it's sturdy and protects the device well.

I have the purple for my Fire HD 7". I've had it about a year, and it still looks like new, despite daily use... and the purple color is very pretty.

I just purchased the blue for my Fire HDX 8.9. The blue color is also very pretty... much prettier than the sample on the web page.

I have the same cover in blue. I'd like some type of sleeve to put the kindle and cover in. I'm nervous about getting something spilled on it in my bag or purse.

Here's the thing about the cover cases - the ones that open up like a book: literally every one of them except for the official Origami case will put the device upside-down in portrait mode. That is, when you open them like a book and flip the cover to the left, the Kindle is upside down. Near as I can figure, for some strange reason, Amazon decided to buck the industry standard for portrait mode. For every other tablet out there, to go from landscape to portrait "correctly," you rotate the device 90 degrees clockwise. But for the Kindle, it's counter-clockwise. I guess Amazon just needs to be different or whatever.

Anyway, it's not a huge deal, but apparently there are a few apps out there that won't flip properly when it's upside-down in portrait mode. And some people here have complained about having to turn the encased Kindle around. It doesn't seem like it would matter to me, but apparently it upsets some folks.

Personally, I went with a Cosmos TPU cover for $6 with FS. It doesn't cover up the screen, but it provides reasonable protection and improved grip while adding a minimal amount of weight. The aforementioned VIES sleeve will take care of things when I'm transporting it.

CJsEasyAsPie says:
Mine don't do that, although they do turn the wrong way once in a while... it has nothing to do with the cover.

Maybe you have some default set that causes yours to rotate?

How about a large Ziplock bag?

I happen to have a box of gallon size bags in the kitchen. I went to try it, and, sure, enough, my 8.9" Kindle in its Finite case fits nicely with the top zipped closed.

It doesn't add protection for anything but spills, but it's sleek and smooth and slips into a purse where a huskier sleeve might not.

when I need to remove the case from my Kindle -- to make it smaller and lighter.

maybe that would work for you.

I have a Mivizu shell 10.1" case, purchased from Amazon for $2.99. It fits and works fine.

Do you already have a stand/cover on your kindle or are you using this as the sole protection?

Do you use the mivizu case alone, and take the kindle out to use, or do you have another case that is more like something you leave on while using the kindle...and then put it in the mivizu shell?
