A. says:
The question mark means the Kindle currently isn't detecting your battery charge level properly. A restart usually fixes that.
Home > Menu > Settings > Menu > Restart.

I am having the same problem with the question mark over the battery. I am not finding a restart option in settings. I find a reset option in device under settings, but it will not allow me to reset because the battery level is below 40% and it will not charge any higher. Any thoughts?

Anyone learn more about this issue. Support was not able to help with this issue.

I called amazon and they are sending me a new kindle fire because of this issue. The ? over the battery Icon means the kindle is not registering a charge. Mine won't work without being plugged in. I did not know that other people were having the same issue! You may need to call amazon and have your's replaced too!

This is currently happening to me. The second I unplug it, it turns off. When I have it plugged in the battery icon has a "?" over it. I will be calling them shortly, I have loved this product so far, too bad it seems to be happening to other people as well.

Hello everyone! Here is some advice I have learned.
1. Take yourself to the main screen where all your apps are.
2. Click the gear next to the battery icon in the top right hand corner.
3. When the menu comes click the plus sign + that says more.
4. This should take you to the settings menu, scroll down and find the device button, click it.
5. Now look where it tells you how much battery you have left. If it says 0% you have let your kindle fire have 0% battery.
6. To fix this, charge your kindle fire (it should already be plugged in so you can use it) for 2 hours, this should get the battery working again, not fully charged, just so it will charge in the first place. Then charge it for the amount of time it should take to reach 100%. Now you are almost positive your kindle fire should work.
7. If your kindle fire has 100% battery (or just an amount of battery not 0% percent) and the question mark is still there consider a hard reset.
8. Safely take yourself to the main menu where your apps are.
9. Hold the power button on the side of the kindle fire down for no less than 20 seconds(keep holding it even when it asks you if you want to power it down).
10. Let your kindle sit for a little while completely turned off and then turn it back on.
11. If the question mark s still there I have no more help for you I am sorry. Consider talking to a represenative of Amazon.com.
Click on the help button in the top right hand corner.

I really hope this helps you!

None of the above steps solved my problem on the kindle fire. It would not take a charge at all. Once I uninstalled Dr.Web Anti-virus Light..........problem solved! It now charges completely and I can even use it off the charger! Needless to say........my replacement was sent out before I figured this out : /

I had the same problem. I couldnt use my Kindle Fire unless it was plugged in, ? over the battery Icon. I gave up, unplugged it and didnt touch it until today. I called Amazon on Sunday and they sent out a replacement, recieved it today. Once I got the new one, I decided I was gonna do a factory reset on the old one before I ship it back and guess what I plugged it in and turn it on AND of coarse its fully charged and working great! Still sending it back. If it happened once it more than likely that it will happen again!

Mine wont turn on unless plugged in and still has the? mark on the charging Icon. This is also the second time it has happened. Both times happened after I dropped it but the kindle fire itself made no contact to the ground just the case and it fell on a pillow. I'm not exactly sure what's wrong with it but I will be calling amazon soon.

This appears to be a constant problem. Call Amazon tech support. They have already sent me a replacement. This has happened previously to my Kindle Fire twice now. The first time, I did a hard reset (holding down the power button). This temporarily seemed to fix the problem. This same issue rose again this weekend and I called amazon and with no questions asked, sent me a replacement.

The Kindle Fire has a 1 year warranty, which just about everyone who ordered the Kindle will be covered. I wouldn't mess with this any longer and call in for a replacement. Amazon was very quick, I just received my new fire today. They appeared to send out my replacement unit under 2 day shipping.

Hope this helps...

I just spoke with Amazon about the same issue. They are sending me a replacement with overnight shipping. I plan on following up with an E-mail as well to get further verification, but the Customer Service Rep I spoke too indicated it is a problem they are trying to fix. I'm dissappointed because I have always had great transactions with them in the past...but I have to say I am pleased that they were so prompt in trying to resolve this issue.

this is the third kindle i have had since November with this problem and radio shack nor amazon will send a replacement. I don't see the point in spending 70 more on a warranty when i bought the 12month replacement to begin with. not my fault same thing happen 3 times. good luck folks.

It happened to 2 out of the 6 we own. They tried the hard re-set over the phone, then immediately sent out replacements for both as they were under warranty. I asked if there was something we were doing to cause it and customer service said no. They were great about it.
