Welcome to Free books and Chat. come on in and browse through the links there are always lots of free books. Have a seat in our overstuffed chairs and put your feet up on the hassocks as you settle yourself in to read the latest treasure you've dredged up out of thousands of free indie publishers or perhaps you were lucky enough to catch one of your favorite well know author's book while it was free.

There's coffee, tea and hot chocolate in the decanters on the counter. Also on the counter there's a variety of freshly baked jelly and cream filled doughnuts apple fritters and I tripled the order of maple bars because they were so popular. Ice cold milk...whole lowfat skim, soy....and newly added delicious Almond in the fridge beneath.

Our sympathy goes out to Suze as she has to say goodbye to a friend Snickers her cat.

My cat is 17 ½ he doesn't move as well as he once did and I dread the day that Suze faces. Our arms are open to ((((((((((Suze)))))))))

I'm sorry I haven't posted much lately. My brother is getting Married on Sat. July 20. He's 52 and has never even had a girlfriend until now. Any way I have been roped into catering his reception.

Regular and vegetable lasagna for 250 people followed by a desert plate of either a four layer lemon cake with lemon curd with a cool whip and cream cheese lemon frosting piped onto each slice or a four layer devils food cake with cherry filling and a cool whip cream cheese vanilla frosting pipe onto each slice....
A lot of prep work. The cakes are all baked and frozen so I can work with layers easier...but I'll probably be scarce for the next week or so....I'll have to pay for all the work....but times like this only come once in a lifetime and I won't let my disability get in the way!!!!!

Leo Little says:
Here is a little story I wrote an hour ago...

Grandma's House.

Karen turned off the interstate, taking an almost forgotten country road that led to the small town where she grew up. The gas gauge was barely above the E as her mind drifted back to the day she left. All she had wanted to do was wipe the small town dust from her shoes. She wanted to see the world and put her footprints on every part of it. All that changed when she turned up pregnant after drinking too much at a party and waking up with her torn panties on the floor.
She looked in the mirror at little Tommy.
She didn't even know who his daddy was.
Her eyes immediately shifted to bruise above his eye that was slowly draining into the socket...He'd have a black eye in a day or two.
With no job and really no one to turn to... Well that wasn't quite true. She could have turned to the Grandma who'd raised her when her mamma died, but she was too embarrassed by the whole thing and she wasn't about to crawl back home ashamed of the life she'd lived. That's what her mother had done. She couldn't count the times as a little girl that she'd promised the sweet old lady that she would be more responsible than her mother had been.
At first going home was last thing she would ever do, besides she was a grown woman and she believed she could raise a child on her own.
She got scared the first time her baby kicked. She wasn't ready to be a mother. She wasn't the mothering type. She'd been a Tom boy all through school. Outdoing the boys in any sport they'd let her play. How was she going to raise a child?
Six month pregnant she thought she'd never in a million years meet a guy, but Gary was dream come true. He brought her into his home, helped her through the pregnancy and even stood by her side in the delivery room, holding her hand. The only trouble with Gary was that he was gay. Still life wasn't that bad. Gary helped her get a job at his ad agency as a receptionist which allowed her to pay for her own apartment and day care for Tommy.
A couple years passed without incident.

Karen pulled into the little store she known as a child as Sonny's, but was now a Gas n Save, luckily they had kept the phone booth out on the corner. With all the cell phones these days it was hard to find a payphone anywhere but the airport. Karen had thrown her cell phone in the trash. She didn't want HIM to find her.
She parked next to the booth and picked up the receiver. She knew the number by heart, but she hadn't talked with her Grandma since the day she peeled out in her little green car. Grandma wanted her to go to college get an education and take things slow.

The day Karen had turned eighteen she cashed in her college fund, bought a new car, loaded her stuff in the back and left without so much as a thank you let alone a goodbye.

On her way home she was hurrying to pick up her son from daycare and rolled around a corner without stopping. Red and blue lights flashed in her rearview mirror and she pulled over, but instead of a ticket she got a date.
Jerry seemed to be a great guy. He didn't mind that she had a child and he was very attentive to her. Being a cop in New York City had its perks and for the fist few month it seemed as if Jerry was able to give a little bit of that world Karen had thought she lost when she found out she was pregnant.
Everything changed when she moved in with Jerry though. He changed. It was like he flipped a switch and went from this really great attentive guy to a man who thought he owned Karen and her son. She left the first time he hit her, but he found her easily and dragged back to his place. He threatened to file charges of child endangerment against her and have her son taken away if she ever left again.
Karen swallowed her pride and stayed with Jerry, putting up with everything to keep her son safe. He made her quit her job so she wouldn't have any money of her own. She only had what he gave her and that wasn't much.
She would have continued her unhappy life with Jerry longer, but Jerry had done the one thing that she couldn't let happen again.
He hit her son.
She waited until he dropped off to sleep, grabbed all the money from his wallet and lit off with little Tommy in the back of her little green car.

It was really late or early morning if you go by the clock. Karen had been on the road for two days. She didn't know where she was going at first and then she remembered the home she had run away from. The home she knew she needed to return to...Her Grandma's house.
Thankfully she had never mentioned her Grandma or any family for that matter to Jerry. As far as he was concerned she didn't have anybody.

Grandma answered on the fifth ring, her voice sleepy and worn. "Hello."
Karen couldn't speak right away, her voice seemed to catch in her throat.
"Hello is anybody there. Hello. Hello. The voice on the other end went quiet for a moment and then, "Karen honey is that you?"
Tears rolled down Karen's cheeks and her voice squeaked like it had when she was a little girl as she answered, "It's me Grandma."
"Tell me what's happened. Where are you?"
Karen's throat tightened as she wiped her tears and looked through the windows at her sleeping son. "I need your help Grandma. I...I took it as long as I could, but then he started in on my son. I can't let him hit my son again."
"You have a son? What's his name? How old is he?"
"His name is Tommy...Thomas Anthony Adams. He's five years old."
"A wonderful name. You didn't tell me where you are though."
"I'm just around the corner at Sonny's...I mean the Gas and Save, but I have to warn you. The man I'm running from is a cop in New York City. I didn't tell him about you, but he has access to my records. He might come looking for me."
"Hush now, you don't need to worry about him any more. Grandma has taken care of it. You just come on home."
"I don't understand. How could you have taken care of it?"
"Just come home and I'll tell you all about it."
Karen got back in the car and drove a half mile or so down the back country road and turned off on the little dirt road that led to her Grandma's house.

Everything was just how she remembered it. The tire swing still hung from the large oak out front. The barn still need painting and Grandma's petite rose bush climbed the archway over the walk to her home which was surrounded by a three foot white picket fence.
Grandma opened the door and stood there with the warm inner light flowing past her, welcoming Karen with open arms.
Karen got out and unstrapped her son, carrying him up the front steps and past Grandma into the only place that truly felt like home.
"Just put him in your old bed. You can sleep with me when you're able."
Karen pulled back the covers and tucked her son under the blue and white comforter...She never did like pink. She was tomboy after all and pink was prissy sissy color. Then she waited a moment just watching over her son until his breathing settled into a strong and steady pace.
Grandma came up behind her, putting a gentle hand on Karen's shoulder.
Together the two women turn and walked into the kitchen, not saying a word until they sat at the table where Grandma had set two steaming cups of hot chocolate.
Grandma, I'm so ashamed. I thought you wouldn't have anything to do with me after you found out I was pregnant. I...I don't know what to say. I love you so much
"Now, now there'll be none of that. You should have known that you will always have a home here no matter what. I love you too. Perhaps you should get some rest now."
"But Grandma what if Jerry comes looking for me here? I know you said that you had taken care of everything, but I don't see how you could have done that?"
"I can see that you not be satisfied until I show you." Grandma stood up and walked over to the back door, opening it before she turned and waved for Karen to follow. "He's out behind the barn."
Karen stood straight up, her eyes filled with fear. "What?"
Grandma's face took on a strength that Karen had only seen a few times growing up.

Everyone around town knew not to mess with Grandma when she got her back up. Like the feisty old cat that used to live in the barn she had claws if you were unlucky enough to see them. Karen remembered an over ambitious boyfriend of hers that Grandma lit into one time. Karen never saw him again after that. The boy wouldn't have anything to do with Karen after that and of course she blamed her Grandma for it. It was the reason she left and didn't come back until tonight.

Grandma came back inside a couple of steps. "Jerry showed up here last night looking for you, but I knew what he was the moment I saw him. He looked and acted just like your daddy did when he came looking for your momma. Come on now, you need to see this so you can get some sleep."
Grandma grabbed a flashlight from the back porch as Karen followed her out behind the old barn. There in front of her garden were two rose bushes where there used to be only one. Grandma shone the light on the fresh tilled soil out in front of the newest rose bush. I buried him right next to your father."
Karen's eyes shot to the other rose bush. "Daddy...I..."
"He was the same breed as that Jerry fella. Thought he owned your momma. Thought he could hit her any time he wanted to. Just like you she didn't do anything about it until he started in on her child. You wouldn't remember it. You were only four. Well your daddy thought he could treat me, an old lady just like he treated your momma. He didn't know my background. He didn't know what I did before I came here. Your Jerry didn't know either. I was a weapons specialist in the war, an assassin if you will. I took out enemy spies.

Your daddy, I shot between the eyes, but I had to improvise with Jerry. I wasn't expecting him. Still the kitchen is full of interesting tools. Did you know a food processor blade makes an excellent throwing disk? It's very well balanced"
Karen fell to her knees on the fresh dirt, tears leaking from her eyes. She had no words. She couldn't believe the sweet old woman who raised her could do anything like this.
"I know this is all hard to take in, but you should know there is a streak that runs through the blood of the Adams women. We protect our children, no matter what it takes. That's why you're here tonight, because come hell or high water that man was never going to hit your son again. I raised you as my own. I only did what you would done if you had the training that I have.
Because just like you, come hell or high water that same man was not going to hit my little girl EVER AGAIN!"

Thank you for the start today (will read your story later - looking forward to that) but just had to comment on the enormous job you are undertaking for your brother's wedding in a week - I am sure that you will manage it all, but it will be quite some achievement, but worth it in the light of the very special occasion, congrats to your brother ♥

♥ Thinking of you ♥

In honour of Snickers :

Roy Burton

My cat, my dear and gentle friend,
As you lay sleeping quietly,
I think of all the times we spend
In true and happy company.
How I delight my life to share
With you, so loyal and dignified,
Sublime reward beyond compare,
Just to see you by my side.

Dear cat, how full of grace you are,
As near perfection as could be,
Most elegant of life's gifts by far,
Proportioned in pure symmetry.
Yet your placid form does hide
A supple strength and gallant heart,
You are, it cannot be denied
Nature's finest work of art.

How much joy you bring to me,
Like sunshine to a winter's day,
What greater pleasure can there be
Than to watch you as you play.
When troubles seem to grow apace
I tell you of my fears and pain,
You rub your head against my face,
And suddenly, all is well again.

In the private world that's all your own
You have no thoughts of greed or spite,
Nor waste your time to weep and moan
Of things that do not seem just right.
I look at you with grateful heart,
As in the fire's warm glow you lie,
The simple joys that you impart,
No money on this earth could buy.

Oh, my dear friend, when you are gone,
Such sadness will be hard to bear,
The rooms so empty, days so long,
When you are no longer there.
But you, sweet cat, you cannot know
That final parting brings such pain,
When fate at last deals that cruel blow,
And I cannot hold you tight again.

My cat, my dear and gentle friend,
As you lay sleeping quietly,
I thank you for the time we spend
In true and happy company.
How I delight my life to share
With you, so loyal and dignified,
Blessed am I with riches rare,
When I have you by my side.

The Fourth Sunrise: A Love Story
Once in a while a powerful love story comes along that forever captures our hearts and imaginations. The Fourth Sunrise is such a book. It is a celebration of how love transcends time, a story that makes us believe in true love all over again.

When the team bus breaks down in Delta, Colorado, minor league baseball player Joel Murphy sets eyes for the first time on Christine, a waitress. Instantly smitten, he will spend the rest of the night getting to know her...and falling helplessly in love. In fact, he's certain she's the one. But when morning comes, Joel must leave quicker than planned and, tragically, never gets to say goodbye. And when he returns after a grueling season on the road, he discovers that Christine has moved on...and has married someone else.

That was thirty years ago...

Now in the present day, as Joel Murphy waits at a coffee shop in Delta to meet Christine for the fourth time in his life, and an intriguing young woman joins him to wait for her date, too. As the hour grows late, Joel begins to tell his new friend about Christine, who he has seen only three times over a period of decades. There is one important secret that he has kept from Christine, one that could tear them apart forever. As the hour grows even later, Joel's heart needs a voice and he begins to spill all the secrets of his enduring and lifelong love for Christine.

A joyous but enormous task calling on your generosity with all there is to do to help your brother celebrate his wedding; still you have spoilt us not only by taking another Monday start but also another great short piece of reading (in case our Kindles don't have enough content calling to us).

I don't always have time to stop and read when your post comes up, but this time I did manage to, and it was great. Thanks so much, Leo. Have a good day on the thread and also all the best for your forthcoming preparations. The meal sounds delicious. Lucky guests!
